Hawkeye, I don't understand why insurance is taking so long to get with it. We had hail damage and they were still out here within a couple of days. If you were to choose to go ahead and get a rental, they should reimburse you anyway. I'm sorry you are having to deal with all of this, it's stressful enough to just have an accident but then to have to deal with all of this on top of it is just over the top. If you have the energy to report the officer you really should, this should be investigated and you have damages because of the delay in getting this straightened out. If you do get him reported you may save the next person the same struggle. I can't believe you've been doing all of this on your own after such a bad accident, that's a lot. I don't blame you a bit for ordering Pizza or doing frozen dinners. That fits in to the whole moderation thing and it's a NEED at this point. You have to do what you need to in order to manage life. My ds's finger will likely heal just fine. There isn't anything to do with it, just wait for it to heal and take antibiotics as a preventive. He goes back in 2 weeks for a follow up which is really kind of dumb because they're just making sure it's not infected and I can do that. Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your mini-vacation. I hope it's not too much for you right now. Oh, the chick shoe, it was a foamie set and already cut. My dd just happened to notice that it would fit the chick. The set had princesses, princes, frogs, crowns, letters, and frog footprints which is what's on the chick. I wonder if I can't cut out foamie sheets on Cricut just the same.

HEChicken, I couldn't do glass around here. Someone would surely break it, perhaps dropping a pumpkin on it or something crazy. My ds tried to drill a hole in tempered glass and got the hold drilled and then when he was pulling the drill out it shattered horribly. Then a few days ago my dh tried to use a piece of tempered glass as a window for a brooder and he was just using a screw to hold the glass in place but not going through it at all. He barely hit the glass and it shattered. I think tempered glass is harder to get to shatter in general but when it does it's a big mess. We don't have good luck with glass around here, we don't even use glass to drink around here. There are shower doors that aren't glass I'm sure, that would work better for us. Thanks for posting pics of the med by the way, I was going to ask for pics because if ever we do need it I won't have a clue what to look for.

I'm so sorry about your chick Danz, that's terrible. I can't imagine the feeling of opening that box. So what happens now? Is it the seller's resposiblity to replace her? Is it possible that you got the wrong eggs and those aren't the chicks you think you have? How will you know and then what?

Can someone tell me>>>>
Ideal temps for incubators with fans vs. without
Humidity range for incubating and lockdown
Ideas for chilling eggs while saving them to hatch, how to keep temps stable and at what temp

That's funny cubbysan, my 8yo dd asked my dh for a chicken coop and she wanted it to play in.

While I was out with my ds at the dr today I got a call from home that I lost another chick from my most recent hatch. I figured it was probably the one I call tap dancer, it's been standing on one foot and tapping the other. When I got home I saw that it wasn't that one at all. What is wrong witth this group of chicks? I don't normally have these types of problems. The only thing I can think of is that it was either the temp issues we had during incubation or that I cooled them before incubating, I've never cooled eggs before. Although it's getting easier to deal with losing chicks, it's still hard. I don't want to just hatch them for them to die. These chicks haven't even been outside yet, they'll be a week old this weekend. I clean their pen every 1-2 days, I prefer every day when they're inside.

Thanks for your help.
I haven't calibrated the hygometer.

What temp is your incubator? These come preset, they are adjustable.
If you have a fan, you want to be at 99.5 and if the incubator is still air, you want it to be 101.

Yes, I thought I saw somewhere that the Bantam Silkie Nationals, but I can't find any other info.
That sounds like the same show Hawkeye is headed to!

Just checking in since I haven't in a while. Been reading a lot of the posts, boy am I learning a lot.

I had to go back to RI the past week because my mother had open heart surgery to replace her aorta due to an aneurysm. She is doing great now.

Came back to my husband still working on the chicken coop. It just gets more elaborate every day! He is now making the pen and predator proofing everything. Hopefully we can move the chickens in today or tomorrow. I will post the pictures this weekend. My 15 year old daughter says it is not fair that the chickens get a playhouse and she never did!

I am thinking about maybe taking my 9 year old to the National tomorrow. Is there a website where we can find some details? She is obsessed with her chickens, this might be a great learning experience. We have been to many dog and cat shows, but never a chicken show!

Glad your mother is doing well. That is so scary.
What a great hubby. Please show pictures soon.

Trish yeah I think I'll make one more try to get some more pullets. I still have one pair if nothing happens to them. I think I am going to try hatching eggs next however the gal told me her eggs didn't produce well. If I got 3 chicks out of a dozen eggs it would still equal out cheaper than buying started birds.
I got out to go the post office but haven't made it further. I told my daughter about the white orpington eggs and now she is trying to make connections to get the chicks taken to Austin at Thanksgiving time. I sure hope I get a hatch or she will be deflated! She has been wanting the white orps for a long time and hasn't been able to find any. I really did want some to breed with myself... so I hope I get enough for both of us.

Wow it is cold today, we got thru it though. The neighbor that I explained about killing their turkey last week, finally realized that the remaining turkey has joined my flock and just gave him to me. They had been taking him home every night. He was already eating over here and napping and playing all day over here, I am glad they gave him to me.

I wrote that last post hours ago and thought I had sent it. Just found it hadn't gone. My computer was acting up.
Well more news in the saga of my eggs. I wrote the guy that the lemon cuckoo eggs didn't hatch and the ones marked SF for Swedish flower did. But when they all came out yellow I was really confused so I wrote him again with pictures and the egg shells that were numbered.
Well come to find out someone had written SF on the lemon cuckoo and LO on the Swedish Flowers. The eggs were all marked with the pen number they came out of. So it was the Swedish that weren't at all fertile. He is going to send me replacement eggs for postage. He was very nice and apologetic about the error and the hatching problems. That is rare. So now looking at the chicks I can tell I have 4 cockerels and 5 pullets so far. There is one more in the hatcher that I haven't determined yet because it is still wet. That is a beautiful thing about the lemon cuckoo orpingtons. They can be color sexed because the boys are much lighter. So I am full up on the orpingtons I'll need for a good breeding program. And if I get a decent hatch from my white orpington eggs I swear I am going to be satisfied with enough orpingtons.
I told my daughter about the white Orpington eggs and explained that it was her Christmas present. So after a few emails, a lot of texts, and a long phone call she is flying high. You'd have thought I was offering her the crown jewels. She normally has a hen that is broody but no one is right now. So I figured I could hatch chicks and if no other opportunity arrived, I would ship her eggs when they matured enough to lay. Oh no! She is too excited for that. She has already made tentative plans to have chicks picked up on Thanksgiving weekend and taken back to Waco, TX where she will drive to from Austin to pick them up.
She said she was going to go out and start building her pens to separate colors. Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch!!!! I do so hope that they hatch both from a financial aspect and from the fact that it will make her one very very happy daughter. I love those rare occasions when I can tell I really made my kids happy. In the meantime I might have sold my Lady Amherst cock to another person who lives in Austin. It would be going back to Austin in the same vehicle. That would be nice. I have 3 LA cocks and want to use the yearling as my new breeder to change blood lines. I have one that was hatched this year and I will probably just sell him next spring.
So it was a busy day. I went to town and stood in line to get my new tags for the cars. Very busy place. I can see why everyone is complaining about the new system. It takes forever. If it hadn't have messed up I would have purchased tags on line like I always do. I got my eggs delivered and visited my sister etc. Then had to get back home and finish caring for the birds.

Danz- I am glad you got your egg situation under control. Good luck with the new eggs he sends you. It is nice to be able to make your child really happy. I know mine are still young but my daughter is 8 and is already asking for certain colored or breed of chickens lol. She gets over joyed when she gets to help me pick up or pick out new chicks, I am still searching desperatly for a cochin for her which she asked for her birthday in august, I just couldnt find anyone selling them for a reasonable price at the time ggrrrr.. Well anyway I know when I find one she will be thrilled, just like she was when I told her I got silver laced wyandottes. I just love to see my kiddos happy,, really happy.

Well I was out in the cold for quite some time this evening doing chores & such & decided to take some pics of the roosters I need to find new homes for. I caught the black Ameraucana sleeping on the roost & grabbed him & took him into the garage to take pics of him. Wouldn't you know it, he woke up in a hurry when I got him in there & after taking a couple photos he decided he had enough & took off in the garage, so guess what, yes he's loose in the garage now. I just ended up leaving him out there because I was frozen & he went & hid, so I guess I'll get him in the morning. I got the two lavender Orp roos pics taken & took them back out to the pen, they weren't thrilled to be woke up either. I'm glad I got all the heaters I had put under the waterers & the heated dog bowls all plugged in, otherwise all the water would be frozen by morning. I have put out bedding in different places for the dogs & cats if they will go in there. Those cattails are coming in handy for those kinds of things, the dogs think my pile out by my new coop was put there just for them. Aren't they going to be mad at me when I throw a tarp over it! I will leave some out for them though & did put a pile of it under the old topper I keep out in the woods for the animals to get under. My GPs won't get in a dog house even if they have one, they prefer to lay out in the open. I had two big igloo dog houses for them, but they never used them so I used them in chicken pens.

Danz, I'm glad you got lemon cuckoo eggs & you're going to get replacements for the SF. How many SFH chicks do you have now? I'm not sure how many I have out there in my grow-out pen now, I have to count again, but I know I have two pretty nice roosters & one of them is the one I'm going to use for breeding & have the other as a backup just in case. I have several crested pullets out there that I'm going to use that are nice & the roosters aren't crested. I just love the colors on those birds, I think they're my favorite breed so far that I have gotten. They're much more hardy birds than the Cream Legbars are, they have proven that many times over. If I could only have one rare breed it would be the Swedish Flower Hens. I do want some Isbars next year, I just have to wait until spring to get them. Maybe someone will have chicks then instead of having to deal with having eggs shipped & losing so much money. I was trying to show you that one guy's peahen he was wanting to sell on the Poultry Swap & that guy just jumped in there & said he wanted it before I could even show it to you. He's really pushy on the swaps, I see him on the rabbit swaps too & he has bought rabbits right out from under me. I'll be asking questions & he'll jump right in the middle & say I want it, he really aggravates me.

Good morning everyone I hope everyone stayed warm. Its 27 degrees in my area super cold for me. Back home (central Texas) we don't see it this cold very often and not this early.
