Consolidated Kansas

Hi, it's time to introduce myself! I'm Lori and I live in/near Topeka with my husband and 3 kids. We live out in the county and have around 30 chickens. I need to go count them again. LOL Just a generic laying flock & we sell extra eggs to friends. I work part time as a para educator for the Auburn-Washburn school district.

I was starting to feel like a creeper when I recognized the school in the picture Medawinks posted of her daughter's Halloween parade. That's the school I work at! It's a very distinct design. I've probably seen you at Dillon's or something, Medawinks! Anyway, I work there, so if you want to come see if I'm normal, feel free!

Anyway, that's me. Don't know how much I'll post, I'm a better listener than a talker!
Welcome to the Kansas thread! Stick around! :) So neat that you work at Medawinks school! :)

Wow - I was the lucky winner on the EcoGlow facebook page for a 20 chick brooder :) Thanks for letting me know Hawkeye - now I just have to figure out how to claim it. I'm really excited.
YAY! So excited for you! Let me know how it works out!

I'm from Lawrence, so not too far! I didn't realize that OP didn't allow chickens in the city limits. I could have sworn that my friend in Lenexa has some, but maybe that's just Lenexa. Good luck with your permit!!!

Sorry to hear about all your septic troubles! Our old place had to be snaked out at least once a year because tree roots kept getting into the main line. I completely understand your troubles!

! Feel free to jump right in and chat!

I think I would have had a heart attack coming out to that! I'm glad it was a "nothing"!

Those are some cuties!! I wish I could have baby ducklings and could keep them just a few days and give them away. I loved my ducks, but boy. Can't deal with them long term. LOL

I"m so sorry :( Do you have a covered pen? Maybe you could try the trick of hanging old CD's to reflect light and scare away the hawks.

Tomorrow is my appointment! Yay!!
I have to share a picture of my granddaughter on halloween. I call her Kaylea Bug, so we dressed her as a lady bug :)

super CUTE!!!

Tweety,
We live right up the street from you!
ha! that is so funny that you guys live so close! I love that area! Short distance to my favorite Italian restaurant. (Piasano's) I hope I spelled that right... Anyway, my brother lives on the other side of the tracks.. LOL

So!! I have exciting news-- my DH put the roof on my brother's coop! Whew. I think I will throw up the doors tomorrow (I hope it's nice) and then we can tote it down to Lawrence!

Best wishes for tomorrow!

I am looking for detering methods to safe guard my flock.
I'm wondering if its a temporary problem while the hawks migrate on out of here? If that is the case, is it possible to contain your flock in the pen until the danger is past and then resume free-ranging?

Oh wow - that is exciting! You'll post pics when its done?

Maidenwolf and Danz, so sorry for the losses of more favorite birds today.

Hawkeye, that is so sad about the thefts at the Derby Atwoods. I was actually in that store a couple of weeks ago and I did notice that she picked up my bag of feed to look under it. I don't think that has ever happened at the other area Atwoods stores but now that you say it happens every time you shop there, I understand better.

Wow, I have been so busy that every time I do get to come back & read there are several pages to catch up on. I went this evening & picked up some used chain link fence & some other welded wire type of fence from the same gal I got the livestock panels from a week or so ago. The fence would have to be straightened out, but it was practically free, so how can you turn that down. I also got 25 cinder blocks & over 100 bricks I picked up & loaded all by myself. By the time I got all of it home & unloaded all of the cinder blocks & bricks I was pooped out. Then I had to still go & feed everyone after that & it got dark on me. My DH got about half of the roofing up today, he's so darned slow. We had some roofing felt in the garage, but he said it must have gotten wet at some point because it was sticking together, so he got aggravated & quit putting it on. Now the last he said to me was that he may go get some more tomorrow. If he could make up his mind about something it would be a miracle & it wouldn't take him so long to get things done either. He chews on things forever trying to decide how he wants to do something & by the time he gets it done I could have had it done already twice over. He aggravates me so bad, like today he didn't get out there to do anything until he had maybe an hour at most to work on it & he does that a lot. I went ahead & took some pics of what he does have done today just because it may be awhile again before he has a chance to work on it.

Danz, I just sent you a PM, you're going to want to check it right away.

Sunflowerparrot, congrats on winning that Brinsea Ecoglow, I entered for that too!

Tweety, what a cutie!

Welcome Lori, we chat a lot on here, feel free to jump in any time!

I'll post pics in a minute as soon as I get them off my camera & onto my computer.

HEChicken-- Do you know how long it takes it for them to go away? I dont remember not seeing them in winter but then again I usually didnt have a problem with them before either..
I wish I had an answer. Maybe try playing a radio or something out there to fake them out so they think you are there. I'm pretty disgusted with the predator problem around here. I may try putting a bright light out by the pens for awhile to see if that works. I just ran out of time to do much with it today. DH said he went out about 3:30 and it was calm so my predator must have shown up after that. I wish I could stay awake and had a night vision scope. I would find that sucker and it would be over.
I like the radio idea. I am going to research some other methods to try and mix and match. I am sorry you have had a time as well with predators. I hope you take care of it soon.

I'm so sorry they got your girl! Seems like they always get the best ones!

Thank you.

OK, here are a couple pics of the new coop progress: The first one is the front facing out where the pens will be. You can kind of see the roofing on this one on the right half. The open space in the middle is where he's going to put the skylights. It's not exactly how I told him I wanted it, but he already did it that way.

And this is the back with all of the people door openings & my DH getting down off the roof to quit for the day.

So, there's been a little bit accomplished since the last pics.

Danz, I was going to say about the lavender Orp/porcelain Isabels that the ones I got were from Chooks, that is one of her projects. I was thinking that Josie had some of her birds too with that lacing. I'm not sure what she's trying to accomplish, you would have to ask her. I was really wanting lavender Orpingtons, but my hatch all turned out to be roosters from the eggs I got. I only got one, maybe two pullets from Chooks if that one turns out to be a pullet & not a roo. The two I know for sure are roos are just going to be huge.

I'm sorry about everyone who is having trouble with predators, especially hawks. I looked up last night after just getting my chickens all tucked safely into the coop & there were multiple Mississippi Kites circling around high up in the sky. They're another predator to watch out for, they're migrating through right now, so beware of them. This was a pretty big group of them together, so I really wasn't pleased to see them circling up there. I hope they move on soon to where they're going.

Tweety, good luck with your procedure tomorrow, I hope it's successful & you feel much better afterwards.

Any chance you are still under warranty? Our high efficiency system had a multiple year warranty.
Thank you for this information. The brand is American Standard and like I said, it is about a year old. Supposed to be a really high efficiency unit, but I dunno....

I don't remember seeing anything that looks like what you described but I will check out that video and wait until DH is available to look at it with me. He is an engineer so generally better at seeing stuff like that than me

Tweety, I hope your procedure tomorrow goes well and accomplishes some comfort :) Your grand baby is so cute!! He nick name definitely suits her :)

Lori, small world :) Welcome! My youngest fell in love with Danz's beautiful peacock, Pete. He is her inspiration and she just adores all of the birds at her bird zoo. She has two silkies here that she absolutely treasures. One is also from Danz's "bird zoo". They HAVE to be glitzy to win her favor :)

Danz, I need to get some picks of the Sussex. I am thinking it may be a roo.... Or just a lot more aggressive than the Marans? It has a bit of a comb, but not much. My son is so scared it will be a roo. He has really got attached and has really taken good care of his chicks. He named it Hazy. No clue why. There isn't even a Doctor Who connection.... Or maybe it is and I am in the dark :). Wouldn't be the first time. I try to understand that show, but I think it must be a show you have to see all of to understand? I never see all of anything any more. That or he loves it because explaining it to me confuses me :)

In any case, my little peacock keeps telling him that he will have to take it back to you. I don't know. I keep hoping he beat the odds and has girls. Her red Topaz laid her first egg this week and she is so tickled! He is bound and determined to have a hen too! Kids!!! :-/

Momma hen, a full thickness burn goes through all layers of skin. It sounds like you may have a 2nd degree burn, which, although painful, will heal faster :) Full thickness burns really need medical care to prevent infection. Keeping burns free of germs and moist to aid in healing and prevent skin from drying and cracking will let them heal best. I hope it is feeling better. There is no pain like pains from a burn.

Trish, your Orps are beautiful! I absolutely love the gray blue colors.

Hawkeye, I am glad you were able to turn the tables on the old guy who couldn't admit a mistake. Good lesson for your kids:) Here is the mask. It flashes and has glitz- totally made her giddy! She def has a mind of her own and a big sis who loves to make her happy:)

Hawks ~ usually the red tail hawks winter here. They sit on power poles, etc along the highways, and I am sure other places also. There was one that claimed the mile of county road between me and the highway last year. I often saw it sitting on the power pole in the field next to me. I was NOT a happy camper and neither were the birds because they had less freedom than they were used to. They are showing up sitting on their look out posts along the highways again. So far, I have not seen the unwelcome one here. They arrive in the fall and leave in the spring.

Others have already mentioned most of the things I have heard to deter them. You can make hiding places for the chickens with pallet tepees or other places the chickens can get under to hide. On another forum it was suggested to use a big, realistic predator kite. An eagle, osprey, etc. I have a hard time figuring out how it would work to keep one flying.

There is a huge bird that sometimes hunts the fields around here. I wish I knew what it is. It is as big as a goose, but flyes in a hunting pattern close to the ground. I have never seen it indicate any interest in my birds and the way it behaves it seems to be hunting mice or small critters. Someone said it is a chicken hawk, but I doubt that is what it is.
