lizzy, I have done that with my guineas, I know I now only have 9 of the oldest ones due to the dog eating one, but sometimes I count wrong too, funny!

Well back at it again, it's warm here today, I've been going around opening windows in the house. I'm sure later I will have to shut them all again.

I've done that too, especially with my ducks they move around enough that I double count them all the time.
Still haven't gotten the power auger set up in the basement. The thing weighs a ton, and we don't have an outside basement access. DH decided to drive to Emporia to rent one instead of paying $100 labor, plus the local people couldn't come out until Monday. They call themselves a rental center but they want to make money on labor. Go figure! I think it would have been worth the extra money to have them do it if we didn't have to wait.
I want to take a shower! I feel grungy!!!! I can't even wash my hands without going outside to the hose.
I guess I could use the drain but if I do every darn bit of it is going to go on the basement floor. Not good!!!
I got a cage set up in the car so I can load peafowl tomorrow. Hopefully they won't freak out and hurt themselves. It isn't going to be fun loading and unloading them for sure.
Well I have to go help DH set up a chain drive thing so I'd better go do it.

We also had three roosters in that order, but we culled them this summer, we had too many roosters.

This spring we got 8 from Heartland hatchery when they came to Tarwaters in Topeka. 2 silver laced wyandottes, 2 silkies, the seabright, the Welsummer rooster, oh, an old english game hen, and a buff cochin that didn't make it.
Also this spring my daughter hatched out 7 eggs as a science fair experiment, 4 roosters and 3 hens. The roosters we culled, and that left us with 3 beautiful mutt hens. So let me see if I can add.....Okay, I get 30 out of all that?

The older ones are molting, but the 5 pullets are laying well, and I do get some eggs from the older birds.

I'm sorry to hear that your insurance is being stingy. I'm curious though. Why is YOUR insurance paying for your van? Didn't you say that the other guy eventually took responsibility? Doesn't that mean that his insurance should be paying for it?

Oh, I totally missed that! Yes, if the accident is deemed to be the other driver's fault, the damage to your car should come out of his insurance. Kansas has a weird deal where personal damage (i.e. damage to the people in the vehicle) has to be covered by your own insurance regardless of whose fault the accident is. But the damage to the vehicle should certainly be covered by the other driver's insurance.

The hawk just killed again, a bigger hen this time. She was in a thin mass of trees under a thicket of blackberry vines. I was outside maybe 1000 ft away, and 5 mins before this I was shooting my 20 gauge to let off steam. He is not scared. I ran back there when I saw him swoop down ( I had been watching him in the tree) I was able to get within 2 feet of him before he back off of her. I could have touched him,he was letting out this low hiss at me, it was creepy. I hit him with a big tree branch and he looked stunned and I was able to grab my hen and he flew away. It angers me so that I cant do anything. If this were a fox or coyote or other dog anything, I could kill it because it was killing my livestock, but the one biggest threat which happens to be WAY over populated is protected? They should open hunting seasons on them like they do deer. Their numbers need to be lowered, and dont get me wrong I love animals and nature that is a huge religious thing for me but something needs to be done.

I totally agree. In Australia, we do an annual cull of kangaroos because they get to be so plentiful that food becomes scarce for them. It is considered to be more humane to kill them with a rifle shot than let the entire herd die a slow, lingering death of starvation. When hawks are going after backyard flocks to this extent, it does seem that they are overpopulated and culling would be to their overall advantage.

Unfortunately....the previous owner worked for an HVAC company, so he installed this system himself and did not leave any warranty info for us. Grrr. I'm not even sure if he's licensed or if he's just an assistant, but if he's not licensed they probably wouldn't have honored any kind of warranty anyway. And, based on the way he did a bunch of other stuff around here, we've lost a lot of confidence that he does "quality work" so I'm not that surprised this isn't working right either. Put it this way, we had to do some work in one of the bathrooms and when the contractor got the floor up and looked at the plumbing, he took a picture to send to his buddies saying "Hey, look what I found". The guy had put in this network of pipes that literally wound around each other with a bunch of 90's and elbows and that kind of thing. It was a marvel to see and needless to say, we're glad our contractor put in the time to fix it.
HEChicken, your house sounds a lot like ours. The people who built this house brand new did some weird things here, absolutely strange. We had a leak come up last year through our kitchen ceiling downstairs. We traced it back to the shower in the upstairs bathroom & had to tear out the shower to find the problem. When the plumber came out he showed us the 'rigged" pipes & just kind of shook his head & said that wasn't up to code for sure. he fixed it the best he could, but had to be creative because of the way they had done things in there. We're sure there are many more things like that in this house, it's frightening.

Ugh - isn't it the pits? I dread to think what else we will find in the way the previous owner did things around here.

I'm suffering with my sewer delemna. I have no place to vent but here. I am even having trouble with hatching my ducks because I really need to scrub things out and get new fresh warm water in the hatcher to keep things going well. I have had some sticky ducks and they don't do well. So I've taken the trays outside and hosed them but that isn't like scrubbing them with warm water. And then they are too chilly to put the eggs back on.
I just put the campine eggs I got in the hatcher as well. Only 5 of the 12 developed. I do hope they hatch though. Should be day after tomorrow. I put another dozen or so ducks out in the pen with the others I had yesterday. I don't know if the sticky babies will make it or not. I dunked them in a bowl of warm water and tried to remove some gunk so they could move but in the past they don't do well like that.
I guess I'd better get outside and feed and water out there while I can. It still feels pretty chilly here today. Nothing like yesterday.

Oh dear - I wish there was an easy and fast (and cheap) solution for you so you could have running water in the house again. I guess the only consolation is that at least the weather has been warm so you're not having to wash hands outside in frigid temperatures.

I work from home, and my birds tend to hang out outside my office window. Every now and then, I'll take a break, look out the window, and count birds. I looked out just a few minutes ago and counted 10 ducks... I only have 9. Somehow I managed to count one bird twice, or maybe I am just so tired that I can't count straight?!?

Either way, I'm sure I'm not the only one that's done this, so I thought I'd share my funny story and let others laugh as well.

Well we are back in business. We finally got the line cleared last night. It was so good to take a shower. I have a fogger so I closed the door as it is and fogged the basement with activated oxine. I haven't gotten to do any cleaning other than vacuuming up what water was standing but I hope it smells better. Let me tell you that smell yesterday while using the power snake was sickening. I did a load of laundry last night to help run more water down the line hopefully to move anything else that might be loose. I am thinking at some point we should replace the lines with plastic so things can't get through it. We haven't had a problem with tree roots but with the drought I imagine the trees are rooting further to seek water. There were some small pieces of root on the auger. Just a preempt that I might want to nip that to prevent a problem later on. It's always money. This little adventure cost about $350. I guess I can't complain cause it has been over 3 years since we had the tank pumped but it never comes at a convenient time to fork out money. I'm just thankful we don't have to use the basement for living space. Although I certainly planned to when I bought this place. I need to just take many many days and do a thorough cleaning.
Maybe I should start a sewer fund. Put the money in an account I would have to pay for city sewer each month and then it would be on hand for these times.
So the bad thing is I am going to be gone all day and then tomorrow I am going to be gone until 1:00 or 1:30, then my duck guy is coming mid afternoon to pick up ducks. So I have no idea when I will get the cleaning done around here.
I should be out feeding and watering right now but when I can't sit and drink a couple cups of coffee that isn't much of a life.
If I was smart I would stay home today and get caught up. I just can't pass up these peafowl after looking for months.

Thanks for the welcomes! One of the reasons I sometimes don't post much on message boards, is because I can't remember what everyone has said!

I need to get going. I have Friday a.m. off, but I'm taking dd back to the dr. Long story, she has a spider bite that went bad. Lots of antibiotics, leg up for 24 hrs., and missing trick or treating, the swelling is down and we're going for a recheck. Hoping she can return to school today!

So sorry about the spider bite, that sounds terrible! Any idea what kind of spider it was? We have those brown recluse in the basement. Freaks me out. I set out the sticky traps and am always putting out new ones when the old ones catch a bunch. I have the traps upstairs, but rarely ever see one up here stuck in a trap. They are mainly in our utility room, I don't see them too much in the rest of the basement-- it's a finished area.

I thought about that, but that is her ONLY symptom. The vet attributed it to getting her leg caught on something and pulling it free. The problem happened from one moment to the next. She was fine, and then she wasn't 30 minutes later. She was immunized for Marek's before I got her, but of course that doesn't mean much.

Hope your insurance company will be fair! We have State Farm and they have been WONDERFUL!

I have Farmers. I think all insurance are about the same, they all don't want to give away their money. My parents have State Farm and they nearly got screwed last year after they hit a dear. They had to fight with State Farm to get what they wanted, and they are still bitter about it. It's ridiculous how we have to fight to get what we are PAYING for.

I have Farm Bureau Financial Services for my insurance company. A few years ago, I was T-boned by a lady. The officer ruled it no-fault because I had gone diagonally across an intersection (there was a road, and then there was a driveway right next to the road. I went across the intersection and into the driveway. She stopped at the stop sign and proceeded to turn into me). There was a possibility for a while there that the other party was going to sue me. My insurance company got their lawyer working on it to make sure that nothing would come of it. I was VERY happy with my insurance company then... I guess the moral of the story is that not ALL insurance companies are stingy. I hope you get everything worked out.

My insurance is paying because the lying man that pulled a U Turn in front of me said he was making a left hand turn and that I was trying to PASS him on the highway!?!? (what idiot would pass a truck that wasn't using turn signals?!) His insurance believed him, and my insurance believes me. They are going to have to duke it out in moderation. IN the meantime, my insurance is paying out on my vehicle. But they aren't being overly generous, that's for sure. I have a pretty reputable company-- Farmers, so they should not be acting like this. As a rule, I refuse to accept the first offer until I have gone over everything and I make sure everything is itemized out. I have only had one other wreck-- and it wasn't my fault. It was a 4 way stop and it was my turn to go and a woman ran her stop sign and hit me. I had State Farm at that point, and was treated well-- BUT my insurance did not pay for it, so I guess that is NOT a testament for State Farm.

But, with the hawks, owls, dogs, coyotes (that are so bold I had one come within inches of me to get the chicken I was holding), fox, coons, possums and probably things I don't want to know are out there, (I saw a juvenile golden eagle one day - That was a BIG bird) I get really paranoid about letting the birds out. But, they really do need the greens they get out of the pasture and I try to stay alert to what is out there. The real problem fox is no more, and for whatever reason the coyotes seem to be staying out further. I hope my dogs barking is helping to keep most of the land predators at bay. I do need to up the level of protection for the birds at night. That owl that was in my yard next to the pen the birds were in, while I was doing chores, has me concerned. I dream of 10 foot, non climbable fence with very good top netting. A donkey or two in the pasture and NO predators. And know it COULD be worse. There are NO bears or mountain lions here. Oops, Kansas does now admit there are cougars in Ks and there are some in this area. Hope they stay the few miles away where I know they are at.

Where the heck do you live that you have all of those predators that come right up to you? That is crazy! Are you out in Western Ks?? I'm down south between Wichita and Wellington, and yeah, we have predators, but nothing like that! WOW. I think 6 foot fencing would work-- just put a top on it and put an apron around the bottom. I am going to be building new pens (When ever I can get my DH to put the darned auger on the tractor) and I plan on going up about 6 feet (NO higher) and then laying an apron around the bottom and covering the top in wire, too.

Well the saga goes on. It is either going to cost another $150 to have the power snake used on the lines to the septic tank or it will cost $65 plus another $40 in gas to go rent one from Emporia. Yeah, my brother is an attorney in Lawrence, and he has been helping me and advising me. Telling me what to say and do. Other than that, at this point, we're not going to court, so there isn't much else to do. But I'm fighting, for sure. Sounds like you got pretty screwed over too. It's SO unfair! Did he kill your hen, or is she okay? I am worried about her, but you never said if she was okay or not.

Hawkeye, you go girl, you can't let that insurance company walk all over you like that. Sometimes you just have to get nasty with them in order to make your point. They will try their hardest to spend the least money they can, but you have to let them know you're not happy & you're not going to take it.

I'm trying to remember everything I read, but there have been so many posts lately. The Red Tailed Hawks are the ones that stay in Kansas year round, so they're usually not as bad as the migrating ones I don't think. We have that type all around here, but knock on wood I have not had a problem with them. My chickens know to run under something if they hear one or see a shadow. We do have lots of cover here for them to get under. But after watching that video yesterday I just didn't realize they would go right into a coop like that & go after a chicken, I felt so sorry for that hen & the ones running out of there were terrified.

So excited about your coop, I hope it gets done before winter!! Those hawks are really freaking me out! I have 4 silkies in quarantine that I brought back from Nationals and they are all out in the yard in a pen. I have had to be creative to get it covered. It's not pretty, that's for sure. I don't want anyone visiting me right now and seeing what I have constructed in my yard! LOL Between the black fluffy cat that is eye balling my new birds... and the hawks flying circles above their pen....

Oh no, so sorry!! Okay... I know there is really NO bright side to this. But maybe I can help by saying--- this could have happened in the dead of winter when the ground was frozen and there was ice everywhere? ANyway, I know, nothing makes up for not being able to wash your clothes and take a shower. What a bummer.

Sounds like you have quite the flock out there! When you cull your roosters, do you use a Killing Cone, or do you just hack off heads? We've always hacked off heads, but figured I've love to know what works best for everyone! Someday, I'd love to start a "meatie" coop-- but I don't want to render all the birds myself! I'd much rather find someone else to kill them for me! I grew up with my dad teaching me at a very young age to hack heads and pluck. Sigh. I could never hack heads, but I could pluck! I was afraid I wouldn't go all the way through.

WOW... I can't imagine killing Kangaroo! Do people eat them? That would be the only right thing to do, right? Are they gamey? Have you ever eaten kangaroo?

You all's stories of what people did to mess up the homes before you owned them-- this is why I'm so happy we did build our house! LOL We know everything was done right. They sprayed our entire basement with that thick rubber coating before they backfilled, the whole thing has a weeping tile system with sump, and our pipes, electric, water, and propane was done by tradesmen on permits. Whew!

Well, that is GREAT news!! SO glad you've got it cleared out and it's working again! Uh oh.. not good about the tree roots. Our pipes that go out to our lagoon are all done in large PVC pipe with vents every 50 ft out to it. It's nice, because you can open up the vent and check it and clear it without having to dig anything up! My parents used to have a septic at our old house and they ended up having to dig new lateral lines because it went bad. I know there were more than one line, I remember the guys digging up our pasture where the horses were and digging like two or three lines out there. If I recall-- I believe they put vents out there too.. ? Anyway, it's sounding like you might be on borrowed time, so I think that's a great idea to set aside some money each money for your septic fund. Then when you need it-- you'll have a little nest egg to get into and maybe it won't kill you. But what a mess, the whole thing. We had flood waters get into our basement at the other house, and my mom used a power washer mixed with bleach and washed down the walls and floor with it. They just broomed it to the sump and it cleaned up pretty well. But I think there was still an odor of river down there, so they did have to go down and paint the walls with that basement sealant paint-- it was really thick and sort of like rubber when it dried. Very expensive, but at least it didn't smell anymore! I was in college-- so I don't recall exactly what they paid, and I just have a vague recollection of what all they did to kill the smell.

Hawkeye- 2 hens have been killed my little tiny d'uccle in my avatar and a new hampshire red, quite the difference in size. Both had just started laying so around 21 weeks or so. I hear it up in the trees watching and calling. It is driving me crazy I cant get anything done for fear the hawk is attacking. The good thing is that they all know the danger of hawks and my turkey hens and 3 of my roosters are giving the hawk call at any low flying bird no matter if it is a turkey vulture or heron they are paranoid and that is good. They spent most of their day in the coop yesterday and would come out when I came out to do chores or check on them. I am very glad that they are paying closer attention to that. I plan on building a lean too type shelter for them so when they are on range they have a shelter to run to. Time to get to work.

My basement was repaired for leaking before I bought the house but the dumb jerks put in metal supports on the walls and didn't use hydraulic cement so it leaks where they tore into the basement floor. (or did back when we actually used to get rain. I started tiling the floor a few years ago but never finished because we had a big rain and it leaked for the first time then. This is the second time we have had sewer back up. I would love to just rip out the entire basement floor,lower it another foot or so, have a barrier put in, and put in a sewer valve that prevents back ups. But I might as well just build a new house if I am going to go to that expense. So most of the basement is just a storage space and a place for the cat boxes. If I could get all that stuff out of there I would totally wash it down and start over. I would need a moving crew though. I have some monster aquariums down there and lots of excess furniture and tools etc.
I really thought I needed a downsize but downsized too much for all the things I kept.
I just noticed the time. I've got to get my butt in gear. I have a lot of driving to do today.
Trish has worked so hard to find me these peachicks. I owe her.
I also got a message from a guy in Missouri who is buying my cochins I am downsizing and he wants to trade a female white peahen for some of the cochins. I won't really need another one but she is laying age so that helps. I would probably have to put her in with my white eyes pair if I want her to lay next year.
