That is kind of what I figured. Man that was a lot of work for nothing! Oh well, the chickens and the dogs will like it anyway. It would have been a lot simpler to just give them to them raw!! I have lots of pumpkin seed I bought this year for next spring. Do you know what other ones are more for decor than flavor?
I'll probably cook this up with some rice and meat scraps for the dogs tomorrow. They love their veggies and rice.

Anything that isn't named something yummy, odd but true. No field pumpkin, jack-o-lantern, or mammoth, or super eddie, or anything that sounds like its impressive or plain. The ones just for pies aren't expensive at all. Stick to the ones that have pie in the name. They are small round little dolls, very productive, and thick deep dark orange rinds.

First and foremost we need your prayers. Talked to Medawinks, and as you might remember her daughter was supposed to have surgery tomorrow. Surgery isn't going to happen cause little S has pneumonia. It breaks my heart this little girl has to go through so much and she is such a beautiful soul. She never even complained or coughed. She just got sick.
I spent hours cutting up and preparing pumpkin today and feeding the seeds and stuff to the birds. Well I cooked a ton of it and I don't even think it is worth eating. It has very little flavor and it is pale in color. I am sure the pumpkins were ripe but maybe it was the kind they were. I think they were called Jacko-lantern. Maybe that type is grown for decoration rather than eating. It was an awful lot of work for something I don't even know if I can use. I thought about trying to make some thing with it to test it but I hate to waste the other ingredients if it isn't going to be any good.
Anyone else ever try doing home grown pumpkin before? I made fresh pumpkin pies years ago but it seems like they had lots of flavor when I got them cooked. I didn't get hardly anything done today I intended. I spent at least 2 hours cutting up the stupid pumpkin and getting it ready to cook.

Bless you heart Danz, pumpkins are time consuming. I did the same thing several years ago when the kids got some pumpkin seeds and wanted to plant them. Pie pumpkins are the way to go, they are much smaller, more like the size of a cantaloupe, the others are grown for size and not flavor. I fed the chickens and turkeys one of the pie pumpkins and they cleaned it out, I mean they picked it to the orange skin, the jack o lantern type they eat the seeds and leave the rest. The seeds are good for worming the flock.

HEChicken- When I prepare my dandelions I soak them in lightly salted water to kill any tiny bugs, seperate the stem from the flower head completely. When you do this use a knife to help pry it off near the top and it will just pop off. I let them dry alittle on paper towels. Then I make a wet batter and dip them in to coat and fry them in a deep fryer. There are also dandelion fritters I have seen recipes for that you cook like a pancake I dont have a recipe for that.
I didnt mean to sell for just a addition to someones flock, I would explain the situation and suggest he to be food. I would not want to cause someone else any problems at all.

Kansas Prairie - I noticed that with my flock as well... the pie pumpkins are picked clean and our jack-o-lantern (that I didn't carve, just drew on) was picked clean of innards, but otherwise is just sitting there. I only paid a buck for it, so I'm not worried. Dillions had a sale the day of halloween getting rid of all their big pumpkins and I grabbed 3 just for the flock. Aren't I a sweet mommy. LOL

Medawinks - Keeping you and your DD in my thoughts that she recovers quickly and the surgery can be rescheduled quickly. I do think that everything happens for a reason....

Danz, I had no idea pumpkins weren't all for eating! So sorry you went to all that work but still the birds will appreciate them.

I grew the pumpkins for the birds anyway to eat the inards. I just hate it when I don't do my research and waste time. Some of the birds are eating the raw pumpkin though so it must not be too bad. I just went and checked the packages I bought off clearance. Most of them are called small sugar and it says they are great for making pies. The others are called Connecticut field and it says they are big and are great for decor but also make delicious pies. I had one package of Jacko-lantern and it say it will make pies too. But doesn't say delicious pies.
So I am guessing the small sugar will be great for pies and the others will just be treats and wormers for the birds. If we get any rain maybe I can sell some of the others at the farmers market next fall or something. I only paid like 3 cents a packet for the seeds so it won't be a great loss. I'll just know better than work myself to death cooking them.
Worst part is I wanted to treat my kids to home grown pumpkin pie. Oh well. They'd rather have my pecan pie any way! You'd think at my age I would know the difference in things like that. Lots of things I used to do I quit because it is easier to just buy stuff, but I am trying to be more self sufficient. I used to plant peas but after hours of work the result just didn't seem to pay. So I don't hesitate at all to buy peas some one else grew and shelled.
