Constant crowing from cockerel

That was kind of rude. I'm guessing you haven't read many rooster threads here. It's a sensitive subject for those of us who do keep and love them. A lot of people seem to think they can control a roosters crow, but you can't.

A dog is a bad example too. You can train a dog to be quite.

You can completely avoid cockerels as day old chicks too. So saying there is "no control" is wrong. It's the entire reason people breed sex linked chickens.

I mentioned the no crow collar. That's because if these types of threads go on long enough, someone is going to recommend it. You don't seem very experienced with roosters, so I was trying to nip it in the bud before someone made it sound like humans gift to roosters.

If you are not capable of accepting other opinions without being rude, maybe you should not be asking the internet for advice. You don't have to take anyone's advice, obviously. Not owning roosters though, would indeed be advice.

I would talk with your neighbors and see if it's even an issue with them.

Anyways, best of luck with your cockerel, and have a wonderful day. ;)

I think saying “don’t have a rooster then” was rude so don’t act like I started it here. If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out! Look I have this rooster and I am sorry if you think its my fault for having him but I have learned my lesson and will only be purchasing pol pullets from now on. I have read TONS about roosters as I recently had to re-home one that had gotten aggressive. I am trying to keep this one and I am simply asking people to share their experiences with young roosters and if they do quiet down once they get older. Not owning roosters is advice, but its useless advice. Gee thanks, why didn’t I think of that! Just simply don’t have one! Well I have one now and I plan to keep him because I am a responsible animal owner and I believe in learning experiences. Gotta start somewhere! Sorry if my simple question offends you but if you have nothing to offer, keep scrolling!

Eating it is also an option.

Sorry I thought you were the person I originally responded to. Not sure why you responded to a post I made about someone else. They were clearly rude to me originally. Not sure what everyones issue is today. Usually I find these forums friendly and helpful but I will go somewhere else for my advice from now on since people just want to be rude and I am expected to take it. Sorry for being a new chicken owner. I guess only experts are allowed here.

Some people have a hard time reading cues from the internet and things can come off rude even when it wasn't meant to be taken that way. But to offer some advice I own two roosters and I got them when hey were day old chicks and I had the same problem but now they seem to have mellowed out and they only crow in the mornings and whenever someone walks over there. My advice would be to wait it out and hope for the best. I ended up getting my roosters on accident too but I ended up loving them and couldn't get rid of them.

@Katejc Everyone gave you helpful, useful advice.
Unfortunately most people who post about roosters and noise are looking to stop the two things correlating. This can end bad. No one wants your boy to die unnecessarily, so regardless of if you use one or not, a helpful word against crow collars is valuable.
There are the obvious answers too, like don’t own a rooster. I think this is valuable because it brings other aspects to light, i.e: Can you legally own roosters? Are your neighbours OK with a rooster? You may consider these to be simple things but they are very often overlooked by new chicken keepers.

At the end of the day, you should realise that this is an online forum, a very small percentage of us are professionals in anything related to poultry, almost everything is opinion based. A lot of people here take time out of their day to help those who can’t afford professional advice. We should be grateful that people answer our threads the best they can, even if we disagree with their opinions/advice. BYC is a great place to safely debate topics but it doesn’t warrant getting heated or snarky on either side.

But I do hope that this doesn’t turn you off using BYC. I thoroughly enjoy using the site. I’ve learned plenty of useful and great knowledge.

I have roosters that crow from sun up to sun down, and some that don’t crow at all. Even when they have “mellowed out” the crowers still crow quite a bit. If that’s goin to be a problem where you live I’d think the don’t have a rooster comment is probably the best advice you gotten so far.

i had 4 silkie cockerels...they crowed all day, and were very loud...in my area we cannot keep roosters, and it was very sad to have to rehome these little guys....it is unfortunate that i fell in love with these little guys since i had them at 3 days old....it was heartbreaking, but when you get straight run you never know what you are going to get.....so i feel your pain....i still do have a frizzle roos, i used to keep him locked up in his own coop...but i now let him mingle with 17 of my girls and he seems to quiet down and not crow very often.....but i cant let him go...he is the cutest thing and most of the time very well behaved....the girls let him know when they dont want to be bothered...

:):):):):pThank you, several people have mentioned that this may mellow out as he gets older which was all I am looking for. I live on acreage with no poultry bylaws so I can definitely own him, but I also am a conscientious neighbour at the same time. Im learning about this chicken thing as I go but I also am being responsible and its just a bit balancing act. I turn to this page for advice when I need it and for the most part its been positive.
He is a good rooster. He is docile, good with being handled, good with my 4 year old and takes good care of his ladies. I’ve added a photo. Yes I know his breeding is awful!

Learn to like it. Teach your neighbors to like it too.
I buy ear plugs and use them when I've got a particularly noisy cockerel and I have to get some sleep.
Most do calm down given time especially if they have their own hens. They are a bit like boys in this respect shouting up and down the street. Once they do get a girlfiend they go quiet and stay at home more.:p
