I have a constipated Buff Brahma...5 days old. She is drinking water but I have not seen her eat any food ever since she started acting distressed. I read another post where they had a distressed chick but no one really addressed what to do to help her.

I saw on "Dirty Jobs" one time when Mike Rowe went to a Hatchery and was taught how to make a chick poo. Anyone know how?

This is my first time...I really need help please!?!

P.S. She really trys to push and I can see a mass of poo trying to come out put she just can't seem to push it out.

Hi
I think it was my post that noone replied about, my buff Orpington chick is acting distressed like he can't pooh, and has a pasty butt problem but he chirps really loud and stressful, while poofing up his wings and wiggles, is that what yours is going? I brought him up this morning gave him some water with an eye dropper, then cleaned his butt by squirting it with the dropper I did get some pooh out, but he is still acting distressed. So you could try that, my neighbor told me extra water, I'm worried its an internal prolapse I see nothing hanging out but he seems backed up, hope someone replies soon, I'm a newbie too. Kim

It's easy to oversqueeze a chick and cause enough internal damage to kill it so I think people will shy away from instructing you on how to make a chick poop. Besides, if it has pasty butt or prolapse, you won't solve either problem with a squeeze.

I'd try a warm, damp washcloth to the vent. It's supposed to help relax the muscles and if there is any pasty butt at all, it will help to clear that.

Ok...good news. She did not have pasty butt and when she would push, poo would just barely peek out but that is as far as she could get it. I wiped her little booty with a warm damp cloth, took a cue tip with vaseline and wiped it around and ever so slightly in her butt. I then found the episode of Dirty Jobs on the Discovery channel. I squeezed her as seen on Dirty Jobs very gently with just a little flinging action. BAM! She pooped A LOT! I put her down and have been watching her for the past hour.

Here is what proceeded during that hour:

She has started pooping by herself again. Pooped a lot and often for a good 15 min. Napped for 10 min. Then she got up and ate, drank, and began preening. She just looks less stressed out!

I sure hope that did the trick. I have now named her "Suerte" which is Spanish for lucky.
