constipated, compacted vent 6 week old chick with soft crop

I read that if the crop is soft the chick may need a baking soda mixture forced down into the crop to expell sour food. Is this true? or would it be better to instead, put apple cider vinegar into her water? I don't want to mix them....I use this combination to clean out my sinks and pipes.

Well, flushing the crop is not for the faint of heart- that said

What is her diet?

Any problems with others?

Does baby food have grit and if you are offering free grit, is it the special kind for young birds (not hen grit)?

Could she have gotten into something?

How long has she been like this?

Please describe her droppings, if any.

(I'd be inclined to offer her some olive oil, just a few drops at first. She may drink it, but somteimes you have to offer in a dropper or the end of a straw.

Is the crop flat in the morning? Is the chick active and eating/drinking OK?

If so, I'm not sure there is anything wrong.


Are you smelling a foul odor from his mouth?

She seems to be doing much better from eveyone's advice and suggestions. Her crop is soft, but I guess is normal for a 7 week old. She is in there singing and pooping, although it still sticks to her butt. I cut away feathers from butt and wash it often and now add corn starch instead of olive oil, cuz I think it may prevent the sticking better.

Am now feeding only her chick feed and water with a little bit of molasses and Bach Flower Rescue Remedy. Poops are dark and stinky, but seem to be getting lighter and less stinky as she produces. she is quite happy now and I am contemplating letting her go back with her sisters tomorrow. Cuz they get to go out into the chichshaw in the sunshine and grass and 75 degrees.

to do away with crust butt
1 gallon ofcick crumbles
1 cup of childrens play school sand is pure white
bought at hardware store like lowes
the chick is where it is too hot and she pastes up
this will un plug her and not hurt any chicks
you could put the 1bsp of apple cider vineager to gallon of water
it will help them all
