Contemplating raising chickens or ducks or both this spring, 2020

Have to be back in time to lock the chickens up. Can't go anywhere overnight.
Build an automatic door and install hot wires around your set up. I'm not back from work during the winter until three hours after dusk and I don't worry about a thing.
Also build your run so it is as predator proof as your coop and you don't have to close the pop door to the run. Everyone will be secure and you can do your final head count whenever you get home from your function.

As Sourland says prepare ahead of time. A little forethought will go a long way towards making your life and the life of your feathered friends a lot easier. Ask these folks about coops and prevention of diseases. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And finally, take your climate into consideration when choosing your breed, this will help ensure success. Don't choose a breed for looks alone, choose for what you want in the long run and it can be a rewarding experience, good luck and welcome home to BYC...

Hi! Welcome! :frow You will love having chickens! They give you a reason to get up and out in the crisp morning air! They provide delicious, healthy eggs and loads of entertainment.

The one suggestion I would make is build as big as you can and as secure as you can, right from the beginning, or you will end up with a bunch of town home style coops. Ask me how I know. :lau
