Contemplating Turkeys

My trio is in a 10x10 pen with a tarp over it. They seem very very happy. Turkeys are great pets. I am loving mine. Cant wait for them to start laying
I have never had home grown turkey but i may have to give it a try now

I bought one of those temporary car shelter things from a box store, it was like $80. I framed in one end for a door and mounted the whole thing on a wood base and covered it with chicken wire (including the top). I can move it around for birds that I don't want running loose. It works pretty good.

We watch our turkeys to predict the weather:
turkeys sleeping in the coop = expect rain or frost
turkeys sleeping on top of the coop = expect clear skies

I have 4 turkeys and they are in an 8 x 8 coop with roosts (they sleep on the highest one).

Their yard is about 25 x 30 and they use every inch they can. They come out to free range in the evenings.

They are GREAT pets and I am really enjoying them. Sad they will have to be Dinner.

However, I have a heritage breed coming in the spring which I am really happy about.

Here is a picture from a bit of a distance that I took last March, I'll try to get you a close up while we don't have snow. This isn't the portable one, it's attached to rail road ties and to the building itself. I just don't like the poly netting because if we get wet snow that sticks to netting we end up with a lot of damage. The chicken wire doesn't sag as much so it seems to drop the snow through more. This particular pen is the first one I did (about 4 years ago?) and was built using an old portable green house frame.

cool thanks.

I am planning on expanding to a bigger tractor next year or so and 80 bucks for a frame sounds great...

( I was thinking that hoop would be the cheapest, but this sounds like it is worth a look)
