Ended Contest #2 Creative Brooder- 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

Mine isn't very creative but it works for my less then a week old babies. I can then move the heating pad to a bigger tote.

Here is my grow out brooder that I use when I move them out of "infant brooder"
I have a window on it to help hold heat in and it can be removed . Cleaning is easy just open the door that is width of brooder house and sweep out.
To clean the run area just rake it. I am planning on putting sand in there. In fact all my pens I am going to use sand. I am using a heating lamp to warm it. Which all my outside receptacles are ground fault so anything goes wrong they trip !

Although it has seen better days, this is my favorite brooder because it lives on the counter and the babies see us a lot and turn out super tame. It's better than TV. It is an old parrot brooder but works great for any birds. It has temperature and humidity control and air circulation. Right now there is one lonely d'Uccle bantam chick in it so that he can see us and not be so lonely.

Want easy? Easy to put together, use inside, then take it apart and use outside.

2 5ft. pieces of Plywood

2 3 ft. pieces of Plywood

4 2x2 corner braces

All pieces are 2 ft. high

Place some smaller wire...like rabbit wire, small squares on top to keep them from flying out..or boards, or what ever you have to keep them in place and safe.

Nothing for a floor..use what you want..then the grass is great outdoors. :)

All is made from a 4x8 ft. sheet of plywood.

You can make a door..or not. Use what you like for hinges and lock.

I use plastic totes, cardboard boxes, and half a 55 gallon drum. The plastic totes and drum are easily cleaned by spraying with a water hose. If the box gets too dirty, just throw it away.

The modified cold frame brooder. I had a glass top on this for starting plants in the early spring outside. But then I brought it in the garage and made two quick (sloppy) chicken wire frame tops and hung a light over it for more brooder space.

The 55 gal aquarium with heat lamp sitting on the screen lid to let them fully dry (really just an excuse to watch them all the time).

Whats more iconic than a big red barn trimmed in white with a rooster in the hayloft door watching over his flock?? Well I dont have the big red barn but heres my version of a little red brooder. Enjoy and ask any questions.

THE LITTLE RED BROODER

Panels are adjustable and slide right in. Made them 12" high, so it can be anywhere from 1 foot to 4 foot high.

Each 4x4 post is notched on two sides to allow the panels to slide in

Held together sturdily by cargo straps...no other tools or hardware required to build or breakdown!

Breaks down quickly and Everything stacks nicely so it's easy to store. When broken down it is only 4'X4'X5" and held together with the same cargo straps used to build it
OVERVIEW: Fairly plain and simple design. 4X4 post on each corner, each one notched on two sides to allow the panels to slide in. Panels are 12" high and there is room to go up to 4 high per side. You can see in one of the pictures as I'm sliding the last panel on the back. Dimension's when assembled are 3'X4'Xeither12", 24", 36", or 48". this works out good so you can have different options depending on the needs of your chicks or your situation. Also nice is that fact that nothing is permanently attached, it can be broken down or assembled in around 15 minutes and when broken down is only 4'X4'X5". The floor is a solid sheet 4X4 that also froms the base to stack everything on when disassembled, while four of the 4' panels serve as the top layer and everything else is stacked in between the 2. Finished it up this afternoon and have already thought of a few alterations that will probably happen over the next few days but I am always open to any comments or suggestions. First alteration will be screwing down the light to hold it in place better, those clamps worry me.
