Whenever I consider a new breed of fowl, I look to see if they're on the Livestock Conservancy's conservation priority list. http://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/conservation-priority-list Of the ducks you listed, all are on the Watch list, with the Appleyard's being on the Threatened list, and none are on the critical list. I usually choose a breed from either the critical or threatened list, as they are the most in the need of people to raise and breed them. They had Ancona, Harlequin, Cayuga, Appleyard, Rouen, Khacki Campbell, Swedish, all breeds I'm sure I would like, And man, they were all adorable and tempting.
Any recommendations? I'm a chicken keeper, but duck-curious.
Of the ducks you listed, I have had Appleyards and Cayugas. I liked the appleyards better... they seemed more content with being penned up, they were not quite as high strung as the cayugas, and were friendlier.
I currently have only 2 magpie ducks, and they are my favorite duck yet, so comical and sweet. Every morning they come up to the back porch begging for their treat of dry dogfood, which they LOVE. For the past 2 years I have tried to let the hen hatch out her eggs, but the first time she set to close to the pond and got flooded out, and last year she didn't complete setting, so this year, I am happy to have 9 of their eggs cooking along in the incubator for this Easter hatch. I always worry something will happen to one or both of them, as I couldn't imagine not having my sweet magpies on my pond, which is why I want to have a few more of them... just in case.
