What I can tell you is that the meds have helped Arthur tremendously. He told me after only a few days how much easier it was for him to sit down and get his homework done. Then I felt horrible for having waited too long to put him on meds. I can't win. I beat myself up no matter what! I try to give him a break from his meds occasionally. If we have nothing going on on a weekend, I won't give it to him. His prescription is for 10 mg in the morning and 5mg in the afternoon. I VERY seldom give him the afternoon dose, but I started trying it on the days that he has archery in the evenings. His archery coach is really good with him and very understanding. Thank the Lord for good people in his life...
We were most worried about it turning him into a zombie, but it hasn't changed him. Arthur is still Arthur, and it has in no way made him perfect, but he can sit still and do his homework without someone reminding him to concentrate every 2 seconds... We have a great relationship with our family practitioner (one of the benfits of living in a small town), and she told me if I didn't like it, we could always take him off... So far, I've seen nothing but good. I'm still struggling a bit with how much Mark didn't want him to be on meds. I feel like I am betraying him by puttng his son on the medication, but i ws just as opposed to them as he was, and I can't believe that he would have wanted me to struggle with Arthur as hard as I was, and after seeing how much better he is when he is on them, I can't believe that he would be upset with me for giving them to him....
