Could also bury them in a compost heap, or just toss 'em into the woods somewhere, albeit where nobody would find them and mistake it for some kind of budding serial killer thing.
It was a past tense issue. Another of same species could likely treated the same outside my lab as it hunts a lot very close to where I go outside a lot.
 
Probably so people watching the video wouldn't get upset about the sparrows being killed. Invasive pests or not, they're cute.
Or maybe he didn't want to deal with killing them at the moment and had just wanted to demonstrate.
