Mine prefer to be with us or under cover they just don't fence hop at all. We are the respected treat givers and I never worry about them even when we are out shopping. The 5 we have are securely imprinted on this property and our dogs. Sure there are tons of predators but they have yet to get one of ours, and I doubt they ever will. We do have a smart heritage breed living under the protection of 3 dogs and a cat, plus they keep under or near cover to defend against raptors.

We only have a 1 acre lot where I am but 24x7x365 forage enough to keep them happy.

BTW @One Of The Flock welcome to BYC! I see this is your first post please allow me to call in the welcome committee! @rjohns39 @Teila @chickens really @KikisGirls @007Sean please welcome our new member!

also please call in any committee members I inadvertantly omitted!

None of the above choices. I have 1 acre of lawn and 5 acres of woods.
I keep my five hens in their five hundred square foot pen till one hour before sunset. They forage for an hour and make their way back on their own. I go out about 20 minutes after sunset and take a headcount, turnoff the nightlight, empty the under coop waterer, lockup the coop and pen. 20180104_141735.jpg . One time my neighbor called and said my hens were foraging on her property. That day I let them out about 4 hours before sunset. I got my dog carrier and caught 4 hens, the other hen was playing run around the tree. She came back home within ten minutes.
Since then I only let them out for an hour before sunset, weather permitting, no more roaming off my property. GC
