Converting this old barn into The Banty Shanty *UPDATES pg 4&5*

Such a great barn to work with. I am so envious

That's a great idea, we're trying to figure out how to do it without insulating the entire barn. The ceiling structure is kinda strange. Not a lot up there to work with.

Working again. We decided since the gaps in the old barn siding were big enough to put your arm through it might not be conducive to keeping chickens safe and warm.

So even though I love the look of an old barn, the South wall is coming off. Not sure what we'll put back up yet. Aside from doors and windows that is.

You can really start to see the bones of the structure. I think we'll end up with four 5'x10' coops and one 5'x20'.

Christine,

A suggestion for you to consider. If any of those old windows that were in the barn are salvageable why not frame in the upper area and put them in there? That way you would have some natural light coming in from above, plus if they are double hung sashes you could open them in the summer and put screens in for added ventilation.

I hope you are saving the old siding and resuse some of it to save on costs of materials. You can probably use it for some of the rough in work or even with some trimming reuse it for actual siding.

Yep, we are planning to put in as many windows as we can on the South end here to help with passive solar heat. We have that in our other coop and it works great. We're also saving everything and doing whatever we can to reuse. A lot of that old siding we took off is at the end of it's life though. Being on the South end and completely exposed to the weather for 150 years or so has taken it's tole. It's crumbling apart.

I know it's a little late, but here's some pics of my finished coop. I have a feeling yours is going to be much nicer, but thought I'd share anyways.

NO INSULATION!!!!! In the winter they can keep warm with their feathers, and you don't want the house to be insulated in the summer, unless you want fried chicken.
