ropo I had an Icelandic breeder tell me horse is leaner than beef and tastes more along the lines of buffalo and deer. He told me in Iceland you are not a good breeder unless you "cull" your herd. I would love to try it. But thats me. (yes I own a horse)

The thing that really burns my buiscuits here is that from reading this thread I have gathered that you got the donk from the prior farmer when you got your home or moved in maybe? You said that he was going to shoot it because it was mating with the cattle correct?

To me that says that you are trying to sell a untamed donk for $400 that you probably got for free... That isn't right, and I cannot believe you guys let him go without food for 3 days. It's awful. I can see this thread getting locked down soon because people are getting heated but this is inexcusable and I hope to god that if you have chickens (you are on BYC afterall) and other animals that they are being fed, and your children, etc.

You never told us if he has shelter either?

As for not being able to make it on $600 a month, I know I certainly couldn't... My house is $1600.00 a month, then we spend about $550.00 on groceries, $110.00 for phone/cable/net, $100.00 on electric, $220.00 for cleaning supplies and feed for animals, and I don't want to know how much we spend for gas but it's in the $200.00 range for a month. When we need oil it's going for over $220.00 per 100 gallons right now. And we have a propane stove, we fill the tanks every 6 months and it's about $300.00...
And we're a family of 5, my husband works two jobs and we do get some gov. assistance.
I certainly wouldn't be keeping an animal around that wasn't contributing to the farm. I refuse to actually.

I had never thought for a moment that you guys were trying to SELL him. I just try to see everyone as being a good person, and trust me, I KNOW what it's like to need to sell something to make bill money. But sell some jewlery, or a game system, or a have a yard sale, or something. Don't try to make a fast buck off of a living creature that is probably very lonely and miserable.

Just please, give him away. Who care's what your husband says. You know it's the right thing to to, deep down, I know you do. Give him away and let him move on into another life with someone else, or move on into a better place in heaven. He's been screwed enough by the human race that he isn't socialized or friendly, no need for you to add to it. Let him move on.
You've heard of Karma right?

My other advice is that you might want to remove your real first name and location from your profile. Might not be the smartest thing to have out in the open if you're planning to come online and announce that you haven't fed your animal for days. Just FYI.

Too long to read the whole quote...BUT well said.....and the "I can't catch him" excuse....If it has 4 legs and you feed it and give it water YOU CAN CATCH IT.....20 minutes and I'd have him in your trailer....But then again If you don't feed him maybe you won't need to chase him to catch him....That is a rather pleasant thought....

Please listen to the good advice that has been given about how to handle the situation with your donkey --- he needs/deserves to be in a spot where he is cared for -- or, if that is not possible, then he should not be left to suffer --
'Free Hay' is rarely the long term answer to a problem --

This donkey could probably be gelded, tamed and loved by someone who knows about training and equine care --

Sending positive thoughts that you'll soon be able to find a good home for this poor guy --

yes, but obviously that does not apply here. because lord knows if they are not bothering to feed it they probably are not watering it either. . . those tend to go hand in hand.

this post has haunted me throughout my day. if i were closer I'd take him and euthenize him for you. OR ( really novel idea here) spend the 10 minutes twice a day with him that it would take to get him to be less skittish, since you've cleared up that he's not totally wild just wary.

Ok, since I can't keep my mouth shut..... I've had weeks where we ate ALOT of pasta and other sources of protein because we had an animal that needed vet care or we were almost out of dog food and didnt get paid for a few days... SO THE DOGS GOT OUR MEAT . I can not conceive just saying oh well, guess you'll have to starve for a few days. how can you look your animals in the eye?
