I agree 100%. I would NEVER let an animal go for THREE DAYS with no food. UGH.

Horsejudy, I fully agree with that. I wish somebody would have done it. He would have deserved it. See the thing is my dad was the type of person that everyone was scared to death of. He was mean, and he was nuts. He told my mom she woul dnever make it on he rown without him, and that if she ever left him, she'd never see her kids again. He was one scarey man to live with.

I'm going to be absolutely awfully bashed for this, but please...hear me out.

What if, instead of condemning the donkey to a life where nobody wants it, why not, um.......butcher it?

I mean, that would take care of the expense, would put food on the table/freezer. It would also ensure that the animal is not suffering from starvation and is not going to a home where it will be abused.

**OK, allow the bashing to commence.**

can you eat donkeys? i have never heard of that before..but that is an option i suppose.
but asking 400 dollars is insane. i dont know much about horses or donkeys but i see really nice looking horses for sale for less than that on craigslist every day, and it looks as if these horses are trained and well cared for.
your husband is being a selfish ass if he would let the poor thing starve in hopes of getting 400 dollars. if he wants 400 dollars, he needs to get cleared from his doctor to get a job and earn it. my husband can barely walk from a hit and run accident, and was on ssi..it didnt pay the bills so he sucked it up and got a job. there are jobs at call centers and other places that dont require physical strain. i mean, do anything rather than let your pets starve. i have pawned things, traded, sold, borrowed money, anything back in the days when we were dead broke just to make sure none of us went without. he could even go donate plasma as a last resort and get him a bag of donkey food, or whatever it is they eat.

You can get the gas or electric paid for if you go into the place you get the EBT card and ask for it:)

People, I'm not trying to be mean here. I am trying to point out that there are things out there to help the McCord family. You probably qualify for commodities, ask at the doh. Actually, I just remembered! If you go to this one webpage, you can apply online for all types of government assistance. What state are you in and I can find it for you.

If you need help with anything, PM me and I can walk you through some things.

yes you can eat donkey, i go often to visit pine rige reservation MANY people there are in the same boat and much worse. there stray dogs will often become dinner. no cwalms about eating a nusance donkey. having it butched is probably what someone buying him for 50 bucks or taking him for free will do anyway if not for themselves than for their dogs, on the rez. cheep meat is a good substitute for expencive kibble when trying to squeek by on very little

some places also have livestock assistance for tugh times, they mighrt were you are at, usualy they will help for a few months

If the donkey has been on dewormer then he likely cannot be eaten anyway as that is NOT meant for animals meant for consumption.

That being said, I would sooner become a vegetarian.

Hope you find a home for your donkey soon! I would definitely check nearby rescues to see if they can help place him.

You can maybe also try COTH (Chronicle of the Horse), a horse message board. Maybe there will be someone in your area that could take him...

Ok I am prob. gonna get bashed for this but..... the op did say she was trying to get the animal a new home. She has already rehomed the dogs. Without looking at her budget how can anyone give spending advice? Yes I agree that she should be giving the animal away since she just wants to find him a home. Its the husband that wants to sell him. Ok if he isnt a bad person yes go ahead and do it while he is gone. My main issue is how many people where the op live is gonna give a donkey of unknown health and temperment a home???? It took my sister 8 months to GIVE a ridable horse away!!!! Don't go bashing the op when she IS trying. If you cant say anything nice or encouraging keep it to yourself.

OP start talking to rescues and tell them your situation, talk your husband into listing Bob as free by telling him that the fines for animal cruelty are much more expensive than the amount you are trying to get out of him, or wait till hubby is gone and give him away and if it comes down to not having feed again call animal control and ask them to come pick him up. Just don't let him go more than 24 hours without (preferably less).
