Cooling the flock when it wont cool off at night.

Putting a frozen gallon of water in the coop at night near where they roost is a great idea!

Today is supposed to be the last day of the worst of it (108), then for us down to 103 tomorrow. We have been freezing large blocks of ice and letting them melt down in the mud so their feet stay cool. However I did have to bring the two older girls into the laundry room for a few hours the day it was 111. They're still mad at me.
I think that's the same here!! It is insanely hot but sooo glad we had power these last few days unlike Saturday night. I haven't wet their floor yet but that also sounds like a good idea.... I'm going to do that now actually!

Where do you live at in N.C.? I live in Fayetteville and am a first time chicken owner (my wife’s fault lol, but I love these birds!) what sort of chickens do you have?

Hey! I'm in Apex but outside the city. I don't have chickens. I decided on guineas because of all of the devil ticks here. We're looking at a larger piece of property in Carthage and then I'll add some chickens.

I had no idea! As soon as I wet their floor, they came running to that spot. They found all kinds of bugs coming up!
Very cool! If you dig it up a little bit and create a depression in the ground, you can put an ice block in there on hot afternoons and it will melt and create a cool pool for their feet, depending on how compact your soil is. I use a large Tupperware (maybe 8x4 inches), and it will last several hours even on very hot days.

Very good idea! Thank you :)
So youre also in California? Are you seeing all the ash in the air?

Yes, Sacramento. There's a layer of ash on my car and it's flying around my yard. I really feel for everyone affected by the fires...it's so scary how fast they grow. Where are you?
Stockton :frow
I agree, I was reading they did evacuations yesterday.
This was the sun about an hour ago...

Bay Area here. We’ve been lucky to only have one day over 100F, but the sustained 90+ has kept our quail and chickens panting. I have one of those patio misters that hooks up to the garden hose — it doesn’t take much water at all. We aimed that at the quail pen and have had happy birdies since. You might say they’re singin’ in the rain.
