Coon Massacre

I use all sorts of traps (live, dog-proof, and foot-hold), have dogs and use a fence as well. The 0.22 is used to dispatch when dogs not handy. The hotwire is generally more likely to proevent the first loss. The other methods are employed only after first loss.

The traps used for feet are much easier to use with some tools that add a lot to their cost. Then you have to dispatch which has already be identified as a problem.

Not sure what the legal issue is with using firearms or an air rifle (these are not like the BB guns of old......they are lethal weapons).......if it is your own personal situation or due to jurisdiction, but whatever, if you can't, you can't. Really only matters if you need to whack your coon inside a live trap.

As "dman" suggests, the dog proof traps tend to be as effective at catching them, and if you are mad enough or frustrated enough, you can always take a baseball bat or piece of pipe to their noggin. Like clubbing a baby seal. I did a number on one once with a 5 D cell sized flashlight. It was him or me and he lost. Compared to that, drowning doesn't seem so bad. All that if you feel you must kill it.

Of greater concern to me now is how a coon got into your coop the second time if the door was closed? If you can figure that out, and keep him out, you may not need to do anything to your coon. If he can't get in, what harm can he do?

Lastly, if you get the coop situation resolved so that any future birds will be housed in safe quarters, and want more birds, my guess is if you were put out an appeal to your state's BYC thread, you would find some replacement birds PDQ and at reasonable costs, if not free.

I posted I would help with replacement birds and that still stands. Shoot, depending on where you are, Id come help with predator proofing if you needed.
