Coons spotted in the area...

pips&peeps :

My neighbor came over tonight as someone broke into his home last night, but that is another story.

Any tips would be appreciated. I have a trap that I can set out tomorrow, what kind of bait should I use?

Thanks,

Any meat (slice of bacon) or whatever will do. They may even go for bread.

If you use wire traps make shure they are big enough, and tide them down so the trap will not roll over.

One of the best traps is one made of a heavier metal (mine is cast iron) it is round of a diameter of 5 gal bucket, with square gate.
You mount it with screws on the top of plastic 5 gal bucket, then set it in horizontal position.

This one never failed to deliver for me.

The only trap I have is one of those rectangular ones. I have trapped large cats in it. If these are young coons, then they may fit.

I wonder if F&G loans out traps???

I will make sure I tie the opening where you put the food in with wire so they don't use their little hands to open it up.

Haven't seen any sign of them, but thought I saw cat tracks out in the snow a few nights ago, wasn't able to postively identify them though.

I trapped mine in one of the rectangular Havaharts, and they weren't small coons!

Check with your local Dept of Environmental Conservation. They may be able to recommend a licensed trapper in the area. A good trapper will make short work of the coons and eliminate the need for you to buy traps or tend to them. Most trappers are more than happy to help out as it fosters goodwill...not to mention the fact that it's a place for them to trap.

Raccoons are very nasty when cornered or caught in a trap so please be careful if you go this alone. I caught the big boar who destroyed my quail, chickens and most of the rabbits. On his hinds, he could look over the top of a 4' wall and weighed close to 27 lbs. That's a big raccoon. Trust me, he looked even bigger up close with teeth bared.

Marshmallows work well. Fluffernutter works even better because they can't grab it and go. I tie a stick to the trap trigger, then coat the stick with fluff and maybe a little jam. Usually seems to get them first time around.
