What I want to know is... what he was going to tell me, when I found two new tiny babies in the brooder when I went to get the others fresh water and food? Did our Australorps invite some of our neighbors chicks over for dinner? were they having a sleepover? no, what did he try ... spontaneous mitosis...

I love how sneaky it seemed before the other half got online! Sounds like something I'd try to pull on my hubby!!

Night two of the birds in the coop and we have repelled the first invasion of chicken castle!!! Neighbors dog tried to get in. all she managed to do was chew on some of the trim. Sarah is not a small dog, but the hardware mesh kept her out! Yaaaaaay! Glad she didn't bring any siege engines. I went up the hill and had a little talk with my neighbor and his wife. They are good neighbors so i didn't make a huge fuss. I think I will put my ladies in the coop before the sun starts to go down from now on. I notice as the light begins to fail they congregate in one corner together.. thats where the dog struck. So I'll put them to bed before they begin their flocking together in the corner.

I went surfing for organic feed.. While the wife is searching the threads for suggestions on BB guns and legal landmines to keep the dogs away. I kinda figured it would be the other way around...

Been away from the birds all day, so has the wife.. hope they are still there when we get home. A little worried about leaving them all day unattended...

Glad to hear your defenses held up, Grungy! I know the feeling - we had a fox dig about a foot deep outside our secure run after about two weeks of chicken habitation. Repelling that attack made all my digging of that 20" deep trench worthwhile!

Also, look forward to that first evening when the chickens will make their way into the coop and roost all by themselves. It makes the evenings that much more relaxing

Good deal on the defenses holding out!
I'm not looking forward to the first time our coop and run is 'tested' by some predator. I know I'll be sitting on the porch in the dark with my bb gun, though!

Yaaaaay!!! Tonight the birds went up into the coop all by themselves!!!! I am doing a happy dance here! First time we didnt have to chicken wrangle. I actually got to use the drawbridge as it was intended. I think a few are even using the roosts. So far the design is working very well. Glad I let the wife talk me into caulking all the seams of the coop, so the birds stayed dry during our latest thunderstorm. I am already thinking of tweaks to the coop, as the birds behavior makes me change little things.
