Coop and Run on slope, building on raised platform

In my dirt run I use dirt for them to dust bathe in. They dig a hole wherever they want to so that's in their control, not mine. It's not always a convenient location but it makes them happy. When it is dry that dirt makes a really nice dust for them to dust bathe in.

Yea, I provide the container in the covered run for when it's too wet out in the yard. When the yard is dry they prefer to dig their own holes. When it's wet they all use the one I provide.

We can stand in it!
Oh sweet! A picture is worth a thousand words! I’d suggest bags if varying sized pine bark mulch over the soil. They can still dig & dust bathe, but the bigger pieces keep mud to a minimum. And it’s relatively inexpensive, easy to replace & easy to rake. It also is light, so it may float a bit.

Our coop is actually in a place that once was a very steep slope. We ended up digging out most of it to form a level-ish ground to put the coop on. We left some of the wall up and made it into a terraced dust bathing area. We dug out the area before winter and laid down some straw, then when winter came it pushed down all the brush and when it was spring the ground was ready
