Yes, taking out the wire and using the full height is a good idea. That should make a lovely, roomy coop.

The narrowness(32") is a definite restrictor.

I think your use of an old rabbit hutch is great. Coincidentally, I just ordered a smaller version for a feral rooster that has adopted my son's yard. He wants to go into my son's duck house but three of the ducks are frightened of him and I don't think the fourth duck would want him in the duck house although she gets on with him in the yard.

I just wanted somewhere safe for the rooster, raised from the ground to keep him comfortable, and with a low roof so that he doesn't crow at 4am. He was in danger of being shot by one neighbor and turned in to animal control by the other who is, she said, "sleep deprived". He is currently sleeping under an upturned tub in my son's shed as an emergency measure.
