Coop Build!

That's a lot of roost for 6 birds!
Maybe you're planning on more down the road?

We quickly learned the roof was bad, after a good storm on the day after we started the build. New roof installed. Not bad for someone who has never done roofing before, in my opinion anyway!
Bummer!
Was it shingled before too?

Welcome to BYC! @govolsguy31
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Haha. We thought so too. We tend to overdo it on our projects. LOL. After chatting with a few, we decided that wall was the best place for the roosts. It was just as easy to run the entire length than only do half or so. They’re just 2X4 studs that are painted, so no real expense either way.

The chickens will probably use the lower ones to vault up to the top, and then all sleep on top, so likely no harm in having them a bit closer than recommended.

We appreciated your input on that for sure!

We just procured our flock! I made a different post on that, but we’re truly going to have a mix of girls. One each of Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, cream legbar, Russian Orloff, black sex link, and blue laced Wyandotte. Coming from two different “local” sources (couple hours of driving total) picking them all up Friday! That gives me two full days to finish the run and few odds-and-ins to be ready for them.

Ooo, that is nice work!I’m wishing I had some materials already now. I’m about to split my big garden into two areas so both my boys can small-range every day instead of alternating days.

Yea, but a horrible job. I didn’t realize how bad it was until we were out there during the rain storm.

We’ve had two or three good storms since the new roof went up. No leaks at all! That’s what I’m most proud of in this project so far I think.
Good you fixed it, nothing like making a new build under an old leaky roof.
Pretty shallow slope for shingles.

Got the majority of the run done today! Fully enclosed in chicken wire, first 4’ also enclosed in 2”X4” welded wire fencing and we also buried 13.5” of lath around the entire run. Have to build the gate tomorrow and have a few odds and ends to finish.
