Unfortunately, it could have been prevented but I was stubborn and felt my chickens needed a heat lamp. Minutes after I had locked them in the coop for the night a fire started. I'm in my first year of raising chickens, since I have discovered the amount of heat chickens put off and as long as they are provided a draft free home there is no need of a heat lamp.
Luckily we were still outside, but it happened so fast and most of my chickens were still young, and within those few minutes I lost 13 chickens from the amount of smoke that the straw produced. The one that has survived was the closest to the door. It was tough lesson to learn from.
She has fully recovered! Thanks for asking. The coop that caught on fire had just been built - it was beautiful - since the fire she hasn't been near the coop and has returned to her previous coop in the barn where all the other barnyard animals sleep.
