My little Coop de Jour just didn't suffice anymore. I scored a shed off of Craigslist. Only problem was getting it home. Good thing I have a friend with a tow truck. It took us a year to renovate it slowly....our weekends get eaten up by various 10 year old boy activities. I am glad to say it is almost complete. Just some landscaping and finishing touches. It is more than I ever dreamed. My husband gets Husband of the Year Award for dealing with all of my chicken crazies.
How do you move a previously constructed 10x12 building?? Easy!!
This was May. Once we got it home, it ended up sitting until the end of summer. Meanwhile I dreamed up chickeny visions in my head of how I wanted it to be when it was done.
We had a pre-existing coop/run. We moved that too the side and started construction on the new foundation. We wanted to be able to join the two pens together so that they could be interchangeable between the two coops.
Again, another score off of Craigslist. I managed to get free decking lumber. Someone was redoing their deck so all the wood was pre-treated. Saving me some time and LOTS of money. We only bought the 6x6's and some of the cross beams.
We added linoleum to make cleaning easier.
OK, now the tricky part. Moving the building to the newly constructed deck with out breaking anything.
Slowwwwwwwwwly......easy does it.
A little fine tuning adjustments and it is good to go.
Now we did some interior remodeling. Another Craigslist score: Nesting box and broody house! The top two "bunks" are the broody houses (or infirmary for sick/injured birds). The bottom is the nesting area. It was originally designed to go up against the wall, but we changed it to become a wall. I wanted my own area that would remain chicken free. My husband thought it would be nice to collect eggs from this area as well. So he made it so the girls can enter on the back side and I collect from the front side.
The back side and a happy hen. They love the nest boxes and I think they enjoy the sun on their backs too!!
Here is how it was incorporated into our wall. It also provides a nice shelf area in front for my extra supplies.
We removed the old shed slide up door and installed a window. The main door on it now was a recycled door, but we will be changing it out before winter sets in.
Here is the complete poultry campus. The large coop is for my free rangers. The small one (The Coop de Jour) is for my breeding stock. This is why I wanted my two pens to be interchangeable.
We also had electric ran out to the large coop as well. It sure is nice!
Our future plans are fixing up the area in front with some paver blocks. We had a drought this year and I don't think the lawn will ever recover there with all the new traffic (human and bird). We wanted something that would look nice but not be harmful to the birds.
It was a long, slow process....but I am in love with the final product!
