Coop design

You can build a coop with almost no money out of pocket if you are willing to spend the time scrounging for materials.
But, it can take forever + a day and you will spend a ton of time doing it.
Start collecting scrap and pallets as mentioned in previous posts. That will work for the coop part.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are great places to shop and volunteer. You have to be quick to get the good stuff though as it goes fast.
However, I have never found any free fencing or hardware cloth that was worth owning. Start saving for that.

We built one coop out of pallets 4x8 the most expensive part was the hardware cloth & hinges. Do not scrimp when it comes to the hardware cloth it will save you heartache in the end. we have 2 coops one is 8x8 all together we have about 750.00 in both coops & runs. Talk to roofing companies about their left over materials, the habitat restore will help some, collecting materials on craigslist, you will still have to pay for screws & nails. Good luck on your build !!

Thanks guys.... I never thought to ask around construction sites! I have a friend whos' husband is a contractor... I'll see if he can score me anything. And if he can't... I bet he could get me a pretty good deal for lumber. :p
Craigslist around here is mostly a joke. The one in the next big town over is pretty decent... but they're an hour away! LOL I believe our REstore just opened back up again... I'll have to go in and see what I can find in there. We don't have any tools per say... but.. our neighbor does and I'm sure if we asked him nicely he would help us build a coop. They have chickens as well and they're always telling us we should get some. We HAVE TO have a coop tho... I just don't trust my Greyhounds in the back yard with chickens!!
