Hey y’all, i’ve posted two other threads of a new coop we want to build. Right now the plans are a 6’ length by 6’ height by 5’ width. I’m just looking for ideas for the main door (the one will be using to walk into the coop). Anything will help!

Do you have a Habitat ReStore in your area? They almost always have old screen doors available cheap.

I had some from a remodel so I put hardware cloth on them to use on my new coop.

The second door has hardware cloth all along the inside because that beadboard panel is cosmetic only and not predator proof.

Should I do for a screen door or a regular wood one??

If you use a screen door you can put a cover over some of the opening if you find that rain/snow are blowing in. That beadboard panel is a retrofit from the remodel before the remodel. Kids and cats had damaged the screen on the lower section of the door so when DH replaced the screen he put that panel on -- which is how I know that it's absolutely NOT predator-proof.

It's not impossible to find a solid wooden door, but they're rare anymore. Most doors are hollow-core and made with a skin of thin luan that will not take any weather exposure.

You can be assured that a screen door was built to be out in the rain. :)

"Draft-free" doesn't mean no air movement at all. It means no breezes strong enough to ruffle the chickens' feathers.
