If the run is secure (hardware cloth or something similar, and not chicken wire) there is no need for a pop door other then a little extra security. If you are using something less secure like chicken wire or bird netting for the run then you will want a pop door for sure.

I bought the Poultry Butler pop door when building my new coop. It is gear driven and programmable. Runs $200 but was worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.
