This is a photo of a friends coop that caught fire. Apparently, living in the California sierras where it is cold, they were using one of the heat lamps for chicks to keep their hens warm. It is what caused this fire. Total loss to the coop. A neighbor spotted the flames and contacted them. They were able to save their 3 chickens. The biggie is, my friend is a firefighter! I have read these lamps can be dangerous, and they do throw a lot of heat Around them...heads up fellow chicken owners! :(

It's -5 at night and in the teens during the day in MA and we are getting another blizzard tomorrow. No heat lamps for me just for this very reason. Chickens have feathers and do not need heat. I would rather them get accustom to the cold than to die in a fire. Glad to hear the chickens were not killed. A coop can always be re-build.
