Coop flooring.

Hey y’all so I got a question in my chicken coop I lay down straw in the actual coop and then I do put just a little bit in there run my question… When I put the straw in the coop they kick it out all the time and it’s so hard to clean the poop off of the wooden floor when they kick out all the straw what’s another option that I can use to put on the bottom of their floor that they won’t kick out and what not

I started with pine shavings, about 3-4" deep. That worked well, but did break down in a couple months. I added a bale of hemp. The bits are smaller, so the chickens can't kick them out the door as easily. I wanted to add another bale, but didn't get it ordered in time, so I put another bale of pine shavings in. The bedding is probably 5-6" deep now. I like it, they like it. I will order another bale of hemp in the spring, though. I like it better than the pine.

You didn't give the dimensions of your coop. Mine is 4x8, so you can compare the area to yours.

This summer we were fighting mite so we had no bedding in the coop for a while ( placemats in nesting boxes easy to wash) but i would open up a paper grocery bag for right under the roosting bar for easy clean up every few days. of course i only have 3 girls...

Are they kicking it out of the coop and into the run? If so, is it going thru the pop door or how is it getting outside? What about putting a lip (we have one for the man door and the pop door) in the opening, so it helps stop the straw from going outside. My chickens just step over the board we used a the lip...

I have linoleum on my coop floor. I also have a board in front of the coop door and a lip on the bottom of the pop door to keep bedding contained.

@Chkgrl06 you should/could lay down some vinyl flooring in the coop, taking it up the wall about 4 to 6 inches OR use paint the coop floor and up the walls with patio paint.

Next, like @RojoMarz said, to prevent them kicking out the straw you can get some scrap wood and build a 2" to 4" high wall in front of the door. The chickens can hop over it to get out and it will reduce how much straw/shavings they kick out into the run. It's what you do at the front of the nesting boxes, so it should work in front of that door.

Finally, like others have said, put at least 3 inches of material down on the coop floor (I do 6 inches myself) to help catch the poop.

Looks like you have a lot of leaves, be sure to throw those into the run for the chickens to kick around and so it attracts some insects/worms for them to eat.

A lip is really all you need. If you want to do it really easy (no nailing) just take a board, like 1x3, 1x4, put it across the opening, and pin it in place with a couple of bricks.
