We had 10 cm last night from another storm and the big one is reaching us now, expecting up to 60 cm (2 ft) by the time it's over, with high winds and drifting of course. The run is roofed, but I have brought all birds indoors to protect the barn ( in which coops are housed) so that the pop doors don't allow heavy drafts. The birds have lots of room, new bedding and extra water and the hoppers are full. It may be difficult to get into the barn tomorrow, we have a window that is human accessible and latched on the outside for this storm. Of course the snow shovel is on a hook inside, easily reachable. All through our highway we witnessed tractors and snowblowers easly this morning, as people cleared what they could to make room for more. It's very cold, too.

This could be a rough one. Everything of consequence from businesses to schools is closed or employees were allowed to leave at noon. Poor hospital and emergency workers will be doing doubles I expect. RCMP want *everyone off the roads*.

After yesterday's daylong blizzard, we woke this morning to bright sun, deep blue skies, and gobs of snow. Luckily today's forecast was wrong, and we're not suffering another day of blizzard winds and blowing snow. Officially we received 17.5 inches, a record single snowfall for this date, but the blizzard winds blew those 17+ inches into 3-5' drifts. I'm 68 and have never seen snow like this in Missouri. We tried keeping up with the heavy snowfall yesterday by shoveling several times, but we could not stay ahead of the fall and the drifting, so finally quit and stayed inside in the warm. This morning, we've shoveled paths from son's place to our house and from our house to the barn and chickens. They stay in an indoor pen by choice mostly through the winter, but we shoveled out an 8x8 area outside in their chicken yard, threw out some scratch and BOSS and a dozen elected to brave the sunshine and cold outdoors. A wonderful neighbor came early and cleared our long drive with his JD tractor--what a gift! Our son missed one dialysis treatment due to yesterday's storm, and he really needs to get out for one tomorrow morning. No plows yet on our road out front. This is a storm of historic proportions for Missouri and probably for many other states that have been hit or will be. I70 which never closes was shut down for 24 hours yesterday, but traffic is moving again now. Our grandson who moved to begin his first job in Tulsa in November reported that their version of this storm was much like ours--big footprint to this adventure. If nothing else, this storm will be conversation fodder for years to come. More shoveling this afternoon--scooping around the outdoor coop so hens can sunbathe in the doorway and egg lay in their favorite nestboxes. Snowstorms are hard work, but oh, so beautiful! Best wishes to all of you in the path of this weather... ~G

Our run doesn't look too bad near the coop. It's attached to the south side of the coop. Blizzard winds blew some in there, of course. There's more at the far end and it's pretty deep. I'll need to shovel that out when I can. There's a big drift blocking the door to the run. It always drifts there. The path to the coop is blocked by another big drift. It looks about waist high and really long. It's funny how it never looks all that deep, until you get out there and start trying to walk in it.

The doors to the shed, to get the garden tractor and snow blower out are also blocked by drifts.

We've been drinking coffee, snacking and my husband has been napping. You really just need to let things settle down, before you try to clear it. Last night, you couldn't see at all. We checked the chickens on the cam last night and this morning. They have been doing great. They were tended to right before the storm hit, as usual.

I think we have a lot of work to do this afternoon!

No snow in Virginia anymore, rain and hot weather melted it all, wind is drying any water left now.
Our coop is a closed horse barn, nothing it gonna get it down. Chickens loved the outdoors 'til this evil wind showed up and blew them back inside...
There is no 3ft snow this year for us yet...don't believe/expect it anytime soon either. They said ice/snow all this week, nothing but warm rain....went up 20d today, too.

my coop which is a refrigerated box trailer is leaking a little bit from all the snow and rain... unfortunately the covered run has fallen because of the Ica and snow....two huge support beams snapped right in half....chickens won't go outside anyways so we are good till the weather clears so we can fix it....the girls complain a lot but when they see that white stuff they stay inside LOL

My garage, machine shed and house have 2 feet of snow on them but last spring I had a corrugated metal roof put on the coop(see my BYC page)--when the temps get up over 32* the snow slides off. Looks kinda neat overhanging the roof except I have to walk under it to open the pop door so scrape it down.
