Coop made from 2x4's and particle board.

I am making my wifes out of osb but planning on eventually wraping and siding it, but in the mean time just painting it. I picked up some used inner tubes to cut up and use as a flexible flashing on hinged areas, to protect against the rain. Just an idea.

I made a dog house from OSB once and it lasted a long time-a few years at least. I just painted it (with oops paint that was cheap) and it was closer than 8" from the ground. I only used 2 x 4s (treated) for the base so it was about 3.5" from the ground. We are using smart siding on our new coop and it's OSB on the inside. It'll be painted on the outside. We're using plain OSB for the roof with metal siding on top of that and I'll paint all of the exposed OSB.

Exterior grade plywood, sealed and painted will last decades. See my BYC page for pics of a simple efficient coop that has been in service for a couple decades with no deterioration. (took me a while, but cheap isn't cheap if you have to redo it)

used OSB to build my coop with also, but I am going to buy the T-111 siding from Lowes- it's basically plywood siding, and it's not very expensive. Paint it, and it should last near forever with good care and re-painting when it needs it!

However, keep in mind that T-111 siding is NOT treated and MUST be painted and you must seal up any cracks, etc. It will delaminate or fall apart if it is not painted with good exterior paint. Honestly, your paint is going to be the make or break on your building and how long it lasts! Use good coverage and you should be fine. Oh and prime it first- or it will just drink up the paint.

I used OSB for our first coop that we changed to a rabbit hutch. IT held through a windstorm that took our trampoline and ripped our wooded swing set to shreds. It did completely roll over upside down, but the boards held!

For the floors and walls on my other coop I covered them with corregated plastic (needed to be light so we can move it) and it is water proof, I can actually spray it down inside and the wood is protected.

Wow, thanks a bunch everyone. I never thought of using Siding....even though I have siding sitting literally right next to the chicken coop. That is a great idea. I need to siding my garage first but after that and depending on the money situation, the next thing will be the chicken coop. Still going to silicon the edges first.

I must be cheap because to me, T-111 is expensive. I used it for our rabbit hutches because we only needed one sheet for each and I didn't want the buns chewing on OSB or the primer that's on the smart siding. For our new hutch we needed 8 sheets so we went with the smart siding, which is almost half the price of T-111 (but not quite as thick). I'm using the good quality Behr exterior paint on it-hopefully that's good enough.
