We have been improving Gabby's chicken coop this past winter and next we are going to tackle her chicken run. She lets her chickens out in the yard but they still have a run for when no one is home. Right now the exisiting run is next to our old dairy barn, the ground is dirt but has a lot of old farm rocks as the base along with the dirt. The areas that have the most rocks in the ground stay somewhat dry, almost like brick pavers with some dirt over them. The run still gets muddy however and she has a few cochins and faverolles = mudballs!
Ideas for new runs: Partial cover over run. We have a pile of old pea gravel and access to sand in a old gravel pit. Would pea gravel as a base work well? How would the sand work as a base for the run over the pea gravel? Would wood chips be better idea, we don't have those at hand? We can buold them a dusting box, but they still would get to go out in the yard at times.
Just trying to get some ideas, Gabby wants to start showing her chickens so I guess they can't just run around and have fun getting muddy all the time.
