Hello all!

We are converting a shed on our property into our first coop! The shed has an overhang with quite a thick layer of gravel on the ground. We are going to use the overhang as part of the run. So I am wondering if I should:
A: Leave the gravel and bury it under some too soil, leaves, straw etc.
B: Dig it all out and then replace with top soil etc. To re-level it

What do you guys think?

Thanks!! 😊

Thanks for the advice!

We're planning on using mostly pine shavings and leaves as it's what we have on the property most of the time. Then add in straw in the colder months
As long as you have a soft bedding, they will be fine. Good luck!

I'd never add gravel to a coop space, but since you're converting existing structure that's different.

However, if a persistent odor ever develops it's probably from poop sifted down into the gravel and that would be the time to think about how to remove it.

My first run was covered in a thick layer of decorative river rocks (toddler fist sized) and our hens did well on it. I’d leave it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If I understand the post what we are seeing in the picture is going to become part of the run and the coop will be in the shed to the right of what is pictured? If that is the case I would put down some leaves, straw maybe mulch and call it good.
