What is the average square footage per hen for a comfortable coop? I have read 10 sq ft/hen, is this accurate?

The "average" is about 4 sq ft per bird in the closed coop area and 10 sq ft (at least) in the outside run. I would advise to go as big as you are comfortable. Much easier to build big initially than to expand.
