Coop treated with DE - safe for week old baby chick?!

... I put mama hen and baby back in the coop but now I'm a little nervous... because mom is going crazy kicking up all new bedding and inevitably making DE dust go everywhere... I'm nervous about the mites returning...

First of all: Every hen with chicks goes crazy kicking up a cloud of dust, DE, dirt, grass, wood shavings, leaves, straw, and any other thing that she can kick up, so there is nothing wrong with your hen.

Just a note - I tackled red coop mite and found them happily living in a thick bed of DE... in my nestboxes...

Second of all: Face the facts, the mites can not be said to return because the DE (Diatomaceous Earth) has not sent your chicken parasites to mite heaven. You certainly still have the same old population of mites on hand, all able and willing to take right up where they left off.

The neem does seem to be preventing mites from getting a foothold in my coop again and I treat it every 6 months as a safe guard. I've had rats chewing through hardware cloth (sadly my quail are a little too tempting so they now live in a shed) so they are tenacious round here! And huge. And with no predators to make a dent its an ongoing battle, not just for me but the whole of NZ and DOC (our Department of Conservation). Between the rats and stoats many of our native birds are restricted to predator free offshore islands. Millions of government dollars have gone into trying to eradicate them. We do what we can, and we have found a poison block they really like, but it's a battle I'm not going to win.

I just got some neem and look forward to trying it out, thank you :) And my situation seems similar to yours, in that the threat of a mite / lice / worm etc. etc. issue will never be completely eradicated because I have around 20 wild chickens that hang out with mine as well as other wild birds, peacocks etc., cockroaches, snails that come and go as they please. So it seems mostly about monitoring that things don't get out of balance, I'm gathering. Best of luck to you and yours and me and mine!

I had someone recommend to me to dip my chickens into a big container of water full of different essential oils etc. to kill the bugs on their body.. and to use permethrin all around the yard. This may be my next move, will keep you all posted.

Hopefully it works as well for you as it has for me. Good thing chickens make it all worth it!

Some of the websites regarding DE are insulting to those who use or don't use DE, but the one I found and posted below is not and its informational. I am not trying to insult anyone. This article i posted is what helped me understand DE for lice purposes. I did read the article above that you posted and the author wrote it was there opinion that DE didn't work as a wormer.... I do not feed it to my animals (including my horses), so I cannot say that it works as a wormer. I will buy the food/feed grade because it is safer, but not feed it. Basically incase we all breathe some in or get a little in the mouth (animals included lol).
I do personally think it works to combat lice/mites. Wood ashes from a bon fire or woodstove are also an old natural remedy I've heard to combat lice/mites.. I am going to try this so ill have to let you know if it works! :)
