Four nesting boxes is plenty for 12 birds, but I am concerned about the square footage of the coop. You said that it is 6.5 x 6.5 feet which equals to around 42 square feet. At a recommended footage
of four SF per bird, it is going to be a tiny bit crowded. Might want to go with 10 birds, unless these you are getting are bantams.

If he really wants it symmetrical he could make a covered shelf to keep supplies in that doesn't go to the inside. You could keep a scooper, or a towel for when you get nasty things on your hands, extra grit or oyster shells, any medications you might have to give, egg boxes, you know. I wish I had some storage out by my coop. I am constantly going back and forth to the house.
