IMHO: People who have animals and do nothing for their care and well being other than throw them a few scraps of food occasionally think they are doing the "born free" thing with their "pets." The fact is they are just too plain lazy to care for them.

I see no problem with the approach. Not what i would personally do. It is common in other countries to let livestock roam. I havent seen it in my area in the US.

The risk is that someone may take and eat your animals or the milk/eggs they may produce!
