Yes, not a Copperhead. Even the non-venomous snakes can inflict a painful bite, especially if startled! I had a 6 foot black snake try to enter my screen door with me right there! I even took my 6' shepherd's crook, and took him for a walk to the fence line and threw him over the fence. I walked back to the door, and he was right behind me!

The screen doors have a little plastic flap on the bottom to fit odd size doorways (I guess?) and he was looking at it like a doggie door for snakes, that he had been through before!! That would be all I needed to jump into bed with a SIX FOOT SNAKE!! Needless to say, he met his maker that day...

If the sewing machine was stored outdoors, it is quite possible the snake did get in on its own. If it was stored indoors, I'd suggest at least some counseling for the offending teen, and I know where there's a good military school (actually my sister knows, but I can find out)

exactly. that is what i keep coming back to, and that is the only answer i can come up with.
and there is just no way it couldve fit into the one ultra tiny gap at the bottom..its just not possible, especially with the drawers being made like they are.
thank you everyone!

If the snake can get it's head in a hole it can fit it's whole body. I have found snakes in the bathroom, and in other areas. A snake will come in a door left open or a window, cracks in flooring, roof and so on. They will find a place in the house like a den. Glad no one got hurt, hope it was just nature and not a child that put it there.
