Ugh! I've been so stupid. I have finally gotten to the point that my girls get to go out several times a day to roam the yard. One of mine is a pretty severe cross beak so she doesn't really get much with the free ranging, but likes to hang out with the others. I bring her mash out into the yard and she eats from that and then runs off happy. She is a messy eater flinging mash all over the place.
The problem... my stupid chicken poop, feed cleaning up dog is allergic to corn (we've known this for years). She's been having intestinal issues for weeks and weeks and we (vet included) couldn't figure it out. Just today my DH made the corn connection (see, I've been stupid). So my choices right now are to either completely lock my chickens in and listen to them holler about the unfairness of it all, keep the food in the run (Hawkeye gets her mash in there most of the time) and hope the corn in the chicken poop is digested enough not to cause issues, or find a corn free alternative.
Please hit me with your best suggestions.
