I call everything above Virginia "up north". I've been as far up as NYC. Talk about culture shock. I remember a lady cussed me out on the street just for looking at her (I was 17). All I could say was "Sorry ma'am, forgive me ma'am". That made her scream more "Where are you from? Mayberry?! Go back home hick!" I just bout wet myself.
Good God! People are so rude.
My sister went to NYC just last week. I've never been, so she had fun telling me some stories. She laughed herself silly watching a 65-year old grandma cuss out a bus driver for letting on a handicapped woman before her (she'd been waiting longer, apparently), dropping the F bomb all over the place. She said it was highly entertaining!
I was born and raised in N.Y., Ohio and PA. give me a southern lady anytime over the northern "ladies". I know there are exceptions but I have not been back in over 40 years..north I mean, and have no desire. I do like watching that Cash Cab show and I am amazed at the polite people in the cab. Southern..Trish, anyone of your friends are lucky to have you. Your sense of humor cracks me up.
As far as the corn...it will all taste the same.
Oh, by the way...we call grilling out...barbeque here.
YUM !!! Cooking them on the grill with the husk on is the BEST!! If we are inside and can't do the grill thing, we leave the husk on and microwave them for 4 min per ear. they turn out great like that too, almost like grilling. Taking the husk off and boiling it takes some of the flavor away. I'm hungry now.
I was telling my DH about this thread and he said when he's out doing his civil war reenactments they take the corn with the husk still on and bury them in the hot coals of their camp fire and in about 45 minutes to an hour take them out and eat them. He said it's the best corn he's ever had. He tries to eat the way the people did back in the civil war and in Sharpsburg, MD (his last reenactment) they called it the green apple and corn battle because all the soldiers had to eat was apples and corn. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9902E1DB1E39F934A3575BC0A965948260
When I lived up north, that's how we did the corn also. Big pit with hot coals, then covered the corn in the husks with wet burlap bags. LOVE ITTTTT!!!!!
I'm about as North as you can get...and everyone I know calls it having a BBQ...whenever we're having something off the grill.
Anyway...I always husk the corn and then put it directly on the grill. Favorite way to cook it. Of course, I roll them in butter(real butter, thank you very much) and sprinkle on some salt..yummy!
HOWDY southernchick, my family are also civil war reeanctors!!!
It was a cultered shock for me when I went to the "nationals" at Chickamunga, GA event....I NEVER saw so many southern men are so polite to us ladies, curtsy, tip their hats, etc. Hats off to those gentlemen! And the ladies are so heart warming and boy, do they LOVE to stuff us with FOOD! LOL
Yes same way here at the civil war events, same way in doing the corn cobs. Delish if you ask me! Nothing like a roasted corn cob! But watch em, so they dont burn!
Planning on going to Gettysburg, PA next year....if our finances allows us to go...
