Cracked corn is what I give mine for a treat. They will follow me anywhere.

What I find amusing is that you can buy it at Tractor Supply in 50# bags for about $8. In another section they sell it to use for wild birds. There it's 5# for $3. It's all about marketing.

corn is a good winter treat, but for summer time it produces a lot of heat in there bodies, but other then that its ok

I throw a cup of cracked corn to the egglayers every morning. And the 6 silkies get a small handful. Whatever they don't eat in the morning they enjoy scratching around for in the early evening when it finally cools off.

Any food that creates energy in the body will create heat. But that is the actual definition of calories, the amount of heat it generates.

(Abbr. cal) Any of several approximately equal units of heat, each measured as the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C from a standard initial temperature, especially from 3.98°C, 14.5°C, or 19.5°C, at 1 atmosphere pressure. Also called gram calorie, small calorie.
(Abbr. cal) The unit of heat equal to 1/100 the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water from 0 to 100°C at 1 atmosphere pressure. Also called mean calorie.

(Abbr. Cal) The unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1°C at 1 atmosphere pressure. Also called kilocalorie, kilogram calorie; Also called large calorie.
A unit of energy-producing potential equal to this amount of heat that is contained in food and released upon oxidation by the body. Also called nutritionist's calorie.

I purchased a large bag of cracked corn and mixed is with a premium birdseed that has whole BOSS, sunflower hearts, peanuts, wheat, rye and tiny bits of pecans. I give them a small cup full in the am and pm and my chickens LOVE it..

We feed our cattle and sheep cracked corn and the chickens clean up after them. It's hot here, and they haven't keeled over yet. But I wouldn't be giving this to them by choice except as a treat.

I keep a bin of 7 percent horse feed in the nursery. On a cold night, I feed the older birds (3 months and above) a bit of it so
tney will keep their boby temps up.

I also feed the birds that come down from the barn a few hand fulls for treats on cold days.

The others are right though, this does raise their body temps a bit and they should not be fed this as a replacement for their regular meals.

The chooks really do go for the stuff and they pick out the corn and leave the rest.
