My daughter and I began our chicken adventure on April 19th this year. New to the chicken business, we started from scratch.

A friend of my Dad generously donated a hen and twelve 10 day old biddies. I had mentioned to my Dad that we were considering getting into the chicken business. Thanks, Dr. Bo!

We converted an old, unused k9 kennel for our coop. Ma Hen did a good job with her babies. A neighbor friend donated a rooster. Welcome to the coop, Mister. All is well at casa de pollo. Ma Hen hatched 9 more babies!

Tragedy struck, predator of some sort wiped out the whole bunch with the exception of Ma Hen, Mister, three hens and one roo from the original bunch. Broken-hearted, I am reconsidering the whole free-range idea! Devastated

Ma Hen laid her first egg today since the last hatchlings! Yay! We shall overcome.

Welcome to BYC. Boy, that is tough. Free ranging is always a bit of a gamble. You may consider getting a flock guardian dog. I am looking into the same. I am leaning towards a Bernese Mountain dog or a Anatolian Shepherd dog. They are brave and strong flock dogs with calm demeanor but do not have the "drive" to herd like a Collie or Australian shepherd. Also, they are very cold hardy which would be nice here in the cold Wisconsin winters. Good luck to you.

Thanks Kernel, my husband is actually thinking of getting a German Sheppard for the yard. Isnt there some specific training for a fgd though? We have a Chijuaja...guess he's not tough enough! lol
