Okay, so I know very little about any other chickens except Orpingtons. Are the Cornish Rocks that Tractor Supply has during "Chick Days" the "meatie" birds or are these also good for pets/layers? There was a lady in Tractor Supply yesterday (first time chicken owners) and she was buying Cornish Rocks for her kids for pets, and I thought Cornish Rocks were basically for meat.

Cornish Rocks, Cornish X etc. are strictly meat birds. They are docile but generally because they cannot move anywhere fast. Some people keep them on a very strict diet and are able to get a few eggs from them before they pass, but they are used mainly for meat as they grow very, very fast.

That is what I thought. I told her that she might want to trade them and get the RIR chicks instead. She sent her daughter back to trade them while she was still in line and the daughter came back and said the male employee told her that "all chickens were for meat" and that these would make great pets. Then the male employee came up to the counter and proceeded to tell the lady that he knew all about chickens (though he said he'd never actually had any) and that I did not know what I was talking about. He was pretty rude and obnoxious, but the lady did go back and trade the chicks. I talked to the lady in the parking lot and I told her that I wasn't trying to create a big deal, I just wanted to let her know what she was acutally getting.

Did I hear someone say something about people who don't have chickens and have never owned chickens who love to give advice to those of us who have chickens?

I'm on the band wagon with you.

I know exactly what you mean about people selling stuff they know nothing about. The man was extremely rude and obnoxious. I'm still considering sending an e-mail to TS to let them know. He was talking really nasty about me right in front of me to the lady - like I wasn't even there. He actually went over and picked up the TS magazine "Out Here" or whatever the name of it is, where the lady is holding the Buff Orp and said "this is a big chicken and they use it for meat, but it is obviously a great pet." I said "yes, that is a Buff Orpington and they are a dual purpose bird - used for meat and laying - and they do make great pets. I KNOW this because I actually have Orpingtons. However, the Cornish rock is used ONLY for meat." He just said "Well, I've never heard that about Cornish Rocks in my life." This man was in his early 60s. I just didn't want to see that little girl heartbroken when her "pets" started dying off in a few weeks.

People like him is why I prefer to stay on my farm with my dogs and chickens and avoid people as much as I can !!

You know Joy, TS may just like to know how their employee's talk to customers... That would have burned me up!

I have a hard enough time even going to TS during "chick days" as I hate to see them by the dozens in those bins, but ultimately you see who's advise the lady took.

LOL Rodriguez - you are 100% on the money about that !!

Tricia - I just called the TS customer service line and left a message. Somebody from corporate is supposed to call me back. I was pretty PO'd yesterday, I have to admit. What made me the angriest was that he was talking about me like I was the idiot right in front of me, but pretending I wasn't standing there. Then he followed the lady out to the parking lot to continue his spiel about me and to impress upon her his "knowledge and expertise." When I got out to the parking lot, he was going in and she was parked right beside me. That is when she came over and thanked me and told me what a "nut" that man was. Apparently he said some pretty nasty things about me to her. That makes absolutely NO sense to me. I did give her my name and phone number and told her to feel free to call me if she needed any help or had any questions about her chicks. I also wrote down BYC's website and told her to join to find some good information she would need.

I just don't get some people
