Cornish Thread

Dark Cornish are typically listed as e Wh color, but I read an article somewhere that (at least some strains) may be brown. Does anyone have Dark Cornish that have "chipmunk striped" chicks? I'm looking for a e+ or eb, pea combed breed for a breeding project. I've laid out a 10 generation plan to create an autosexing meat bird. I've been thinking about it for several years now and I think it time to finally do it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've never raised Dark Cornish chicks. Does anyone have pictures of newly hatched chicks? RIR are wheaton and since Dark Cornish are often described as wheaton, I thought they would be more evenly colored like the RIR. I thought wheaton gave nearly solid colored down, E+ gives very distinctly striped down, and brown gives less distinctly striped down. If I use Dark Cornish instead of Welsummer (my original plan) I can maintain larger size, conformation, and the pea comb. Thanks again!

dark cornish are (should) be very distinct chipmunk type, some are a tad less well marked and those tend to be to light
I believe dark cornish are E+ with a columbian marker...but i could be wrong

Wheaton chicks are born bright yellow, no striping. A Black Breasted Red although many are similar looking at adult feather (males) have very distinct chipmunk marks with an eye line.

there are several other colors that have chipmunk type chick down to different degrees
Hope this helps a bit

2 concerns: If you are raising meat birds- what the sex matter for auto sexing? They all eat the same.

You'll waste your time with 10 generations of different stuff lumped together, much outside 3 or 4- the influencing blood is at such a small degree-- it won't matter. We are talking 2 and 3 percent or less. Unless you linebreed tons.

Depending on how old you are, 10 generations may take a life time to acheive- especially if any road blocks exist.

Yes, every dark chick I've hatched was chipmunk colored
