Cornish Thread

haha y'all think Cornish are expensive and hard to get ahold of... try the Kulang (really big) aseel... 500$ is cheep for one bird i had a breeder offer me a really good trio for 2000$ needless to say i still don't have any lol...

As for Al in Oklahoma u just have to get to know him... if he likes u he will give you the shirt off his back or some of his best birds... but he does not have time to mess with fools, noobs, or ppl that annoy him... not aiming that at anyone just stating a fact... after 4 or so years of talking to him i consider him a good friend and a great guy...

Sounds like the type of guy who should reconsider and take a little more time with the so called "noobs" It would be nice to see those who are knowledgeable be willing to make sure the "noobs" get it right. Seems like everyone started out as a "noob".

He should take the time... just sayin' a lesson I learned when I had kids.

Those Kulangs are popular with the asians and is a great place to get them, and for a lot less. I have a friend that is from Thailand and he has them.

I like him too. We've talked and he is indeed a great guy. But it's true, he won't sell his stock to just anybody. And that is his right, no matter a person's reasons, they have the right to sell or not to.

Besides, he did have most of his best breeding stock killed by dogs a few months ago. Suffered a real bad setback.

normally i would agree with you... the problem is there is maybe 20 ppl in the USA that are real good LF Cornish breeders and then hundreds if not thousands that see a pic and read about them and then want them and have all kinds of questions... so those 20 ppl could all have full time jobs doing nothing but answering questions and teaching ppl about LF Cornish... unfortunately they also have there own lives to live and full time real jobs to work on...

after some one has raised chickens for 2 or 3 years and then bred them for 4 or 5 years then u could start raising LF Cornish and have a solid base to start with... then u just have to learn the finer points that are specific to LF Cornish... then guys like Al and a few others will be more than happy to talk to you...

then if you look at Rocks or Orps or some of the other comon breeds and there are thousands of good breeders to answer the questions and teach ppl... so it spreads the load out alot more... LF Cornish and some of the Oriental games are just a whole different ball game...

i don't really have the time or the place for them now but i spent 5 years looking for some and kept coming up with dead ends... allot of the Asians that do have them will only sell to other Asians or just don't want to be bothered... i talked to one guy that had brought them over illegally and was not letting any live birds leave his place for fear of getting caught... only person i got to agree to sell me some reasonable was Doc (Saladin(sp?)on BYC) and i never got the money together to make the very long drive and get the birds from him...

You hit the nail on the head. I love LF Cornish and am starting to enjoy the bantams as well, though my overall view of bantams is "what's the point?" But these guys are different. I haven't the space for them but some day I'm going to have me some good Cornish.

They are also very gamey and must me tethered or penned seperately, at least the cocks. That is the reason my friend does not sell them to just anyone. Most people have no idea the extra work in keeping these type of birds requires.

If you want good cornish it takes time and persistance. Most breeders raise several hundred birds a season, they do not keep them all nor do they eat them. I have found some great birds by finding an outlet where a breeder quietly sends his culls.

One of the things that is different about LF cornish is size is always an issue and most new breeders overlook nutrition. You're making a muscle bound chicken and they need fed accordingly.

i am 29 years old and i have been around chickens and been chicken crazy from day one... Mom and Dad let me add 5 RIR chicks to there McMurry order when i was 6 years old... until i started researching LF Cornish and then the Kulang Aseel i had considered my self a chicken expert... now i know other wise lol... i think i know enough to raise them successfully but i do not have the facility's or the time to do them right at this time... i have been offered free birds or help getting a start with them from several different ppl but i have chosen to wait until i can do the breed justus... so i just lurk around the Cornish and Game threads to feed my addiction for now...

I am just the same as you, Heritage farms, and don't have the space. Nor the rest of the facilities to raise LF Cornish. I'll not take on these amazing birds till I feel I can do them justice. I can't. Not now. Oh sure I could get some maybe an maybe do an OK job but they are NOT like any others, They are not. These are the bulldogs of the chicken world and much more fidgety than anyone could beleive. I'll not have them till I think I can care for them properly. In the meantime, I leave it up to people like Al and the rest to do what they do so very well.
