Everyone has their price even Al. I have a PM to prove it. $200.00 a bird is crazy for culls. Al has decent birds but there are other breeders out there that are in it for the birds and have as good or better stock and are not in it for selfish (IMO) reasons. Joining a breed club is the best way to get a person in touch with good generous breeders.

VERY TRUE

Some say it is being selfish, others many say it is vetting out those who are not serious. Just sayin'.
And taking oneself too seriously may lead to the extinction of rare breeds. Even if you only create a few more "serious" breeders amongst those you sell to, the breed is better off for it and is more assured of being perpetuated. Breeders and hobbyist should never lose sight of the original purpose of these animals, food on the table. Hopeully they never become strictly "Show Queens" good for nothing but to stare at, there are plenty of those breeds already.

They can be found...

But maybe people should buy average- and do their own work to make the really good ones.. then they appreciate it more, and will see both sides of the arguement to a truer extent...

Now I am confused......Yesterday I agreed with not riding on anothers coat tails.....a little of my history...I am getting back into chickens this spring. I ordered from Cackle Hatchery and then found BYC where lots of breeders wanted me to buy from them, claiming that their chickens were better so.....I ordered more birds from Duane Urch...now you seem to be telling me (and I agree) that I should not buy from Mr. Urch and ruin his reputation....what is a fellow to do....????

I am laughing at my confusion, truth in advertising seems to be the best idea, if you buy from me at some time in the future you might get great chickens and you might not...

I have always preached that it is impossible to beat your competition by buying soley from them. IMO, you need a touch of them to level the playing field- but from there- you need something different to gain the advantage.

Interpret it how you like...

I do believe that the difference in hatchery quality vs. breeder quality vs. show quality is drastic. Maybe not so much between the 2nd and 3rd, as the 1st has-- but still different.

IME- I think one should buy from a source or two of number 2- and a source of number 3 to get to an endpoint. I don't think buying a number 1 and a number 3 will get you anywhere but making slightly better number 1's...

A breeder who is serious about being a BREEDER and not just a chicken owner, is the person who looks to improve one generation over its parents. Not all the people who want to own a rare breed and breed them are doing that. The problem with these Cornish is that people will get their hatchery birds, throw them in with good breeder or show stock and think they instantly have the real deal and start peddling it as such. Then on top of that, they use the breeder's name they got the good stuff from to sell their own mix with, and then charging higher prices for it.

I know if I get a good show line of poultry going and someone buys them from me and then turns around and uses my name to charge as much as I do for them, I will be, for the sake of keeping it clean, very unhappy.
I have Urch line Buckeyes. They are nice birds, very nice, in fact. I tell people they are Urch birds, but I don't sell my chicks for $7 per as he does because that just is not right. That is one point I am making.

which is why one should ask for pictures of the parent's when buying hatching eggs...

I am not a real big fan of pictures, I believe that Cornish are truly hard get a feel for by picture. You can usually get a sense of a persons stock by talking to them. I personally believe that our stock is fairly good and we have room for improvement and have done OK at few shows, and try to give people a realistic sense of the birds I am sending. And again this does come down to a conversation, It also has to come down to you as the buyer knowing what you want as well the second thing is when dealing with rarer breed you may have to be willing to carry birds when they are available. ie get them in the fall and have to overwinter instead of looking in the spring when breeders are down to the breeders.
