Cornish Thread

I see some of the Cornish out at shows and I don't like the excessiveness that I am seeing. If mine can't breed naturally, they are going to have to go in the pot. I am not messing around with that. Why would anyone want to. With any species, why breed them to the point where they must have human intervention to even be able to breed?

If they made natural breeding a requisite in the SOP that might hopefully limit how extreme breeds could become- although it would be tough to prove. When I read through the disqualifications for tampering with the birds in the SOP, I was astounded at the dishonest things that have been thought of- to win at all cost.

Trust me, there are cheaters in every species when it comes to showing. I learned that when I was a kid.

It is likely a combination of things, but the legs do play a big part in their ability to breed or not. If they can't mount a hen, they aren't going to get the job done.

Me personally, I think not being able to breed might be more related to the oversize (chicken/turkey) breast, not so much leg length- Or else how come Dorkings and Scotts Dumpies have no trouble? The trick to breeding with short legs might be a long keel- just wondering.

Glad I like a rooster with a longer leg too, then!

Although short legs keeps the meat tender, I hear!

Guess that's why rattlesnake meat is so tough? I'm just having fun with you. I'm delighted to have 'Shorty' coming to use over my hatchery DC's. They should be greatly improved and if the right breeding decisions are made, I should have a very respectable flock at a point, in the near future. They will never be show birds but that's just fine with me since that's not my plan for them.

A bit over 5 pounds at 4 months.

Rattlesnake takes like fish...
With the cornish Ive always heard its their legs and that their hip freezes or locks up. That being said I've seen cornish broiler roosters being very very active around the hens

Yay. I have 1 of DC setting for about 4 days now. Free ranged with 3 DC and 1 RIR roo. Not sure how many will be what or how many she is setting but I'm still excited.
