Cornish Thread

Well I just have to share, my 3 dark cornish hens are laying up a storm (well, for Cornish!) and all of their eggs are over 60 grams now. I'm just absolutely thrilled! Good girls. It's true, they can be decent layers! Nice, cream to tan coloured eggs, great strong shells............ exactly what I was hoping for.

Awwww...... he's lovely. He looks so tiny! What's he weigh?

Lol I'm like five days late on this response. Whoops.

You know I honestly have no clue. I would guess maybe 1.5 pounds. He's very compact. I need to get my hands on a good scale, I had one until it broke last week but that one was better for standard birds anyways, it weighed like 1-25 lbs.

Hey, for those of you who keep back Cornish Cross, when do you usually see the pullets begin to lay? I kept back the runtiest of runts from last year's run of meat birds and she's going on 4.5 or maybe 5 months now (not sure exactly when I got her - she was more of an oops meat bird I got from somebody who had ordered "White Leghorns" and very quickly realized that was not what she had received). She's still quite healthy, about 10 pounds, and she has a beautiful red comb and wattle so I know she's getting close to laying. Super sweet and docile bird as well.

Mine started at 20-21 weeks at the end of Dec and still came on strong once they started.

My 7 newest. She was free ranging with 1 RIR roo and 3 dark Cornish. Half of the chicks do not have the stripes. But they will either lay or make a good dinner anyway.
